Low Cost Travel Giant Wizz Air Receives Historic Approval For Transatlantic Flights

LONDON, UK — March 6, 2026 — Low-cost powerhouse Wizz Air UK has officially cleared its final regulatory hurdle to begin operations in the United States, following a landmark decision by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) this week. The tentative approval, granted late on March 5, 2026, authorizes the carrier to perform both scheduled and charter air transportation of persons, property, and mail between any point in the United Kingdom and any point in the United States.

While the permit allows for a full range of services, the airline’s immediate strategy centers on a high-profile entry into the North American market to support the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Wizz Air UK has confirmed that it will initially focus on specialized charter operations designed to transport European football teams and supporters directly to match venues across the U.S. this summer.

A Milestone for the A321XLR

The catalyst for this transatlantic leap is the Airbus A321XLR (Extra Long Range). Wizz Air has been aggressively expanding its Gatwick-based fleet of these narrow-body, long-haul aircraft, which offer the range necessary to connect Western Europe with the U.S. East Coast at a significantly lower cost than traditional wide-body jets.

The move represents a strategic pivot for Wizz Air, which had previously resisted the transatlantic market. However, the unique demand surge expected for the World Cup provided an irresistible "proof of concept" opportunity.

Yvonne Moynihan, Managing Director of Wizz Air UK, expressed the significance of the achievement in a statement released this morning:

“This is a proud and exciting day for everyone at our airline. Receiving approval to operate between the UK and the United States is a huge milestone for our company. It opens the door to incredible opportunities, particularly for European football teams and supporters travelling across the Atlantic this summer.”

World Cup Charters and Future Prospects

Although the current approval includes provisions for scheduled flights, Wizz Air has been careful to manage expectations regarding regular commercial services. The airline currently maintains that its focus remains on the charter market for 2026. An official statement from the carrier clarified the operational intent:

“With approvals now secured, Wizz Air UK may provide tailored charter flights for European football teams and supporters travelling to the World Cup, and to tour operators organising group travel to the US. As communicated earlier, the airline has no intention or plans to launch regular commercial flights to the US.”

Despite this conservative stance, industry analysts believe the infrastructure being built, including the third A321XLR recently based at London Gatwick, lays the groundwork for a potential low-cost scheduled "long-haul" disruptor by 2027.

Navigating Regulatory Objections

The DOT's decision follows a 21-day window during which opposing parties can file objections. While previous applications from Wizz Air’s Hungarian parent company faced pushback from U.S. pilot unions regarding labor standards, the Wizz Air UK subsidiary has successfully navigated these concerns by emphasizing its adherence to UK-based regulatory and safety standards.

If no significant objections are upheld, the final order will remain effective for a two-year period, allowing Wizz Air to test the viability of the Atlantic crossing during one of the busiest travel summers in American history. For now, the "Ultra-Low-Cost Carrier" (ULCC) model is heading west, and the A321XLR is the vehicle making it possible.
