Vernal, Utah Regains Essential Air Service as Contour Airlines Takes Over Route

The US Department of Transportation has reinstated Essential Air Service (EAS) at Vernal Regional Airport in Utah, selecting Contour Airlines to operate the subsidized route. The decision restores commercial air links to the eastern Utah community after a period without scheduled service.

If you live in or travel to the Uintah Basin region, the return of scheduled flights means a shorter trip to major connecting hubs and more predictable travel options for business and leisure trips.

What the DOT Decided

The DOT selected Contour Airlines to provide EAS at Vernal, connecting the community with Salt Lake City. The carrier will operate the route under the federal EAS program, which supports commercial air service to smaller communities that would otherwise struggle to attract airlines on a purely commercial basis.

Vernal previously lost scheduled commercial service, prompting local officials and the state to push for reinstated federal support. The new order re-establishes Vernal's place in the EAS network and provides funding for the carrier to operate the route.

About the Operator

Contour Airlines operates a fleet of regional jets and has built a substantial portfolio of EAS routes across the United States. The carrier uses Embraer ERJ-135 and ERJ-145 aircraft on its scheduled services, offering all-jet operations rather than the turboprop equipment sometimes seen on similar routes.

For passengers, that means a faster ride into Salt Lake City and connections to major domestic and international carriers operating at the hub.

Route and Schedule Details

The service links Vernal Regional Airport (VEL) with Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC). Below is a summary of the planned operations on the route.

Specific flight numbers, departure and arrival times, and operating days had not been finalized in the DOT order at the time of the announcement. If you plan to book, check Contour Airlines' website closer to the launch date for confirmed timetables.

How the EAS Program Works

Congress created the Essential Air Service program after airline deregulation in 1978 to make sure smaller communities kept access to the national air transportation system. Under the program, the DOT provides subsidies to carriers willing to serve routes that lack sufficient commercial demand to be profitable on their own.

For a community like Vernal, EAS support closes the gap between what passengers pay in fares and what it actually costs a carrier to operate the route. In return, the airline commits to a minimum schedule, aircraft type, and level of service for the duration of its contract.

What This Means for Travelers

If you are based in Vernal or the surrounding Uintah Basin, the reinstated service gives you a direct alternative to the drive to Salt Lake City, which can take several hours by car depending on weather and road conditions. A short flight into SLC opens up onward connections to destinations across the United States and abroad.

Business travelers working in the region's energy sector stand to benefit from more predictable scheduling, while leisure travelers gain easier access to national parks, ski resorts, and other Utah destinations that rely on air access.

The route also brings the option of same-day round trips between Vernal and Salt Lake City, something that has been effectively impossible without scheduled air service in place.

Booking and Connecting Options

Once schedules are finalized, you will be able to book directly with Contour Airlines. The carrier typically sells tickets through its own channels and offers interline agreements with larger carriers, allowing you to combine a Contour segment with a mainline flight on a single itinerary.

If you plan to connect at Salt Lake City, factor in enough time between flights to move between concourses and, where applicable, to re-check bags. Salt Lake City International serves as a major hub for Delta Air Lines, offering a wide range of onward connections.

Looking Ahead

The reinstatement of EAS at Vernal reflects a broader pattern of communities across the western United States working to restore or preserve commercial air service after route cuts by regional carriers in recent years. For Vernal, the return of scheduled flights marks a step toward reconnecting the community to the national air network.

Local officials have consistently backed the effort to restore service, arguing that reliable air access supports the region's economy and quality of life. With the DOT's order in place and Contour set to begin operations, travelers in eastern Utah will soon have a direct link back to Salt Lake City and the wider world beyond.

Keep an eye on Contour Airlines and Vernal Regional Airport for the launch date, confirmed flight times, and fare details as they become available.
