MONTRÉAL – Air Canada has officially cemented its status as a premier global carrier by launching an aggressive international expansion strategy. The airline is currently introducing 10 new and resumed long-range routes that redefine nonstop travel from North America, headlined by flagship services reaching up to 17 hours in duration.
This strategic pivot is powered by two critical fleet developments: the arrival of the "game-changing" Airbus A321XLR and the initial deliveries of the Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner. By leveraging these next-generation aircraft, Air Canada is opening secondary European markets and solidifying its dominance in the Trans-Pacific and South American corridors.

The Endurance Leaders: 17-Hour Flagship Routes
The centrepiece of this expansion is the connection between Vancouver (YVR) and Singapore (SIN). Spanning over 12,800 kilometres, this route stands as one of the longest nonstop flights in the world, utilising the fuel-efficient Boeing 787-9. This is complemented by the Vancouver–Bangkok service, which has transitioned to year-round operation due to overwhelming demand.
Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Air Canada, noted the strategic importance of these routes, stating:
“Our seasonal Bangkok services from our Vancouver trans-Pacific hub become year-round, solidifying our position as the only airline with non-stop, continual service to Thailand from the North American continent.”

The A321XLR Revolution in Europe
Starting in the summer of 2026, Air Canada is deploying its new Airbus A321XLR fleet, equipped with 182 seats including 14 lie-flat Signature Class pods, to serve markets that were previously "operationally or economically marginal." This includes the highly anticipated nonstop service between Montréal and Berlin, marking the first direct link between the two cities in over two decades.
The narrow-body expansion also touches Nantes, France, and Ponta Delgada in the Azores, allowing the carrier to capture high-yield leisure and VFR (Visiting Friends and Relatives) traffic without the risk of over-capacitating the routes with larger widebody jets.

A Future Built on Efficiency
Looking further ahead, Air Canada has finalised a firm order for eight Airbus A350-1000 aircraft to eventually replace ageing widebodies and push even deeper into the Indian subcontinent and Australia. For 2026, however, the focus remains on the "twin-track" strategy of A321XLR and 787-10 growth. Reflecting on the European and Atlantic expansion, Galardo added:
“From Canada to Berlin, Ponta Delgada, Nantes and Brussels, we are strategically increasing new non-stop routes across Europe to bring convenient access to key destinations, while strengthening economic ties, and supporting tourism.”
With these 10 routes, Air Canada now operates the second-largest transatlantic network in North America, trailing only United Airlines, while maintaining a firm grip on the burgeoning Southeast Asian market.
