Embraer Hands Over First C-390 Millennium to Czech Air Force

Embraer Hands Over First C-390 Millennium to Czech Air Force

Embraer has delivered the first C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft to the Czech Air Force, completing the handover 20 months after both parties signed the contract. The delivery marks a notable milestone for the Brazilian manufacturer as it expands the aircraft's footprint across European air forces.

The Czech Republic signed the agreement to acquire the C-390 in 2024, ordering two units in the transport and aerial refueling configuration, known as the KC-390. The deal placed the country among a growing list of European operators choosing the aircraft to replace older platforms in their fleets.

What the Deal Includes

The contract covers two aircraft along with a full support package. That package includes training for pilots and technicians, spare parts, ground support equipment, and technical publications. The Czech Air Force will use the C-390 to replace its aging fleet of CASA C-295M transport aircraft, which have been in service for years.

The aircraft features an aerial refueling capability, allowing it to serve both as a tactical transport and as a tanker. This dual role gives the Czech military more flexibility in operations, whether moving troops and cargo or supporting fighter jets during long missions.

A Growing Customer Base in Europe

The Czech Republic joins a lineup of European nations that have selected the C-390 Millennium. Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden have all placed orders for the aircraft. Beyond Europe, the Brazilian Air Force operates the platform, and South Korea has also signed on as a customer.

The aircraft's growing appeal stems from its combination of range, payload capacity, and interoperability with NATO standards. For countries updating older Soviet-era or first-generation Western transport fleets, the C-390 offers a modern option built to current specifications.

Aircraft Specifications

The C-390 Millennium is a twin-engine jet-powered military transport designed to carry troops, cargo, and equipment across a range of mission profiles. According to Embraer, the aircraft can carry a payload of up to 26 tons and reach speeds of 470 knots, making it faster than turboprop competitors in its class.

The aircraft supports a wide mission set. Operators can use it for troop and cargo transport, medical evacuation, search and rescue, humanitarian missions, aerial firefighting, and paratrooper operations. When configured as a KC-390, it can refuel fighter jets in flight using either wing pods or a boom system, depending on the customer's needs.

Embraer has emphasized that the C-390 fleet in service has demonstrated a mission capability rate above 80 percent and mission completion rates above 99 percent, based on data from operators.

Twenty Months from Contract to Delivery

The pace of the delivery stands out in the defense industry, where transport aircraft procurements often take years to move from signature to handover. Embraer completed the process in under two years, a timeline the company has highlighted as evidence of its production capacity.

Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense and Security, spoke at the handover ceremony. He said the delivery reflects the trust the Czech Republic placed in Embraer and marks the beginning of a long partnership between the company and the Czech armed forces.

The delivery also carries weight for Embraer's broader defense strategy. The company has worked to position the C-390 as a competitor to established platforms like the Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules and the Airbus A400M. Landing new European customers, particularly NATO members, supports that goal.

Industrial Cooperation with Czech Companies

As part of the agreement, Embraer signed industrial cooperation deals with Czech companies. These partnerships aim to bring local industry into the C-390 supply chain, giving Czech firms roles in manufacturing components and providing services related to the aircraft.

Such arrangements are common in modern defense procurement, where buyer nations often require the seller to invest in the local economy or transfer technology as part of the deal. For the Czech Republic, the C-390 program brings both military capability and industrial opportunities.

What Comes Next

The second aircraft ordered by the Czech Air Force is expected to arrive in the coming months, completing the initial order. Meanwhile, Embraer continues to market the C-390 to other potential customers around the world. India, Saudi Arabia, and several other nations have expressed interest in the platform.

For the Czech Air Force, the arrival of the first C-390 begins a new chapter in its transport capabilities. Crews will now move through training and operational testing before the aircraft enters full service. Once operational, it will support both domestic missions and international deployments alongside NATO partners.
