A Premium-Heavy Configuration
The refreshed Boeing 787-9 will carry a notably premium-skewed layout. United's reconfigured Dreamliner will feature 64 Polaris business class seats, including eight larger Polaris Studio suites, along with a dedicated premium economy cabin and standard economy seating toward the rear.
That configuration signals a clear strategic shift. United is chasing the high-yield transatlantic and transpacific traveler, the corporate flyer, and the loyalty member willing to pay a premium for space and privacy. The airline has spent recent years watching Delta One suites, JetBlue Mint Studios, and various Middle Eastern and Asian carriers set the pace. The new Polaris Studios aim to bring United into that conversation.

What Sets the Polaris Studio Apart
The Polaris Studio suites occupy the front row of the business class cabin. They offer roughly 25 percent more personal space than a standard Polaris seat, along with a dedicated ottoman that doubles as a companion seat for dining. That detail matters. It allows two passengers traveling together to share a meal face to face, a feature that has proven popular on competing carriers.
Each suite includes a sliding privacy door, a 27-inch 4K OLED entertainment screen, and Bluetooth audio pairing. The standard Polaris seats also receive doors, though in a slightly more compact footprint. Both products feature caviar service on select routes, an upgrade to the dining program that United has been quietly expanding over the past year.
For enthusiasts who track cabin hardware, the seat itself is a variant produced in partnership with a well-known European seat manufacturer. The finishes lean darker and more residential than the previous Polaris product, with wood-grain accents, softer lighting, and additional storage cubbies flanking the main console.

The Delayed Rollout
United originally intended to have these suites in service earlier, but supply chain constraints and certification hurdles pushed the timeline back repeatedly. The airline first showcased the product at industry events and to select media well before any aircraft entered revenue service. That gap between reveal and reality frustrated loyalists who had been promised a next-generation experience.
The delays are not unique to United. Nearly every major carrier attempting to introduce a new business class seat over the past three years has faced similar headwinds. Seat certification, in particular, has become a bottleneck as regulators scrutinize increasingly complex mechanical and electronic components inside modern suites.

Route Deployment
The reconfigured 787-9 aircraft will initially enter service on select long-haul routes where United faces the stiffest competition. Expect deployment on flights connecting major hubs like Newark, San Francisco, and Chicago to destinations across Europe and Asia. The airline has indicated that premium-heavy transatlantic routes will see the aircraft first, given the concentration of business demand and the presence of formidable competitors operating similar suite products.
Over time, United plans to expand the configuration across additional Dreamliners and eventually to its incoming Boeing 787-10 fleet. The airline has a substantial order book with Boeing, giving it ample opportunity to standardize the new interior across widebody aircraft in the coming years.

What It Means for the Loyalty Program
For MileagePlus members, the introduction of Polaris Studio suites raises interesting questions about award pricing and upgrade instrument redemptions. United has moved toward dynamic pricing across much of its award chart, and premium suites on newly reconfigured aircraft tend to command higher redemption rates. Enthusiasts hoping to book the Studios using miles should expect competitive availability and elevated pricing during peak travel windows.
Complimentary Premier upgrades, which apply to standard Polaris seats on many routes, will not extend to the Studios. Those front-row suites will likely be reserved for full-fare paying passengers or those redeeming a specific number of PlusPoints, following the model United already uses for its premium transcontinental product.

The Broader Competitive Picture
The timing matters. American Airlines has been rolling out its own Flagship Suites on new Boeing 787-9 aircraft, while Delta continues to refine the Delta One experience. Overseas, carriers like ANA, Japan Airlines, and Qatar Airways have set high benchmarks with their respective suite products. United needs the Polaris Studios to perform well, both operationally and from a customer perception standpoint, if the airline hopes to command premium fares against that competition.
For aviation enthusiasts, the arrival of the reconfigured 787-9 represents more than a hardware refresh. It marks a philosophical shift for an airline that has historically prioritized network breadth over cabin polish. The Polaris Studios, once they finally enter revenue service, will offer a concrete test of whether United can deliver on a promise it made years ago.
