CANBERRA, ACT — Residents of the nation’s capital are officially swapping their winter coats for boarding passes as Virgin Australia prepares to bridge the gap between the frosty Australian Highlands and the tropical shores of Indonesia.
Starting June 22, 2026, Virgin Australia will become the only Australia-based carrier to operate international services from Canberra Airport, launching a highly anticipated nonstop link to Denpasar (Bali). The announcement, finalised today, January 30, 2026, marks a watershed moment for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), which has struggled to maintain consistent international connectivity since the pandemic.
The new route is expected to inject more than 40,000 seats annually into the market, catering to a surge in demand for the "Island of the Gods." For years, Canberrans have faced the logistical hurdle of connecting through Sydney or Melbourne, a process that often turned a six-hour flight into a ten-hour odyssey.

A Strategic Milestone for the "New" Virgin Australia
The decision to launch international operations from Canberra is a bold move by Virgin Australia, underscoring its shift toward high-demand leisure routes. Utilising its fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft, the airline will offer its signature three-tier cabin configuration: Business, Economy X (extra legroom), and Standard Economy.
“This is the first time in the history of the company that we will operate internationally from the capital, marking an important milestone in our broader network expansion story,” stated Dave Emerson, CEO of Virgin Australia. “Virgin Australia will be the only Australia-based airline operating internationally out of Canberra, and the only carrier on this new route.”
Emerson highlighted that the move aligns with shifting travel patterns: “Indonesia has now overtaken New Zealand as one of Australia’s most popular international travel destinations. Last year, we carried more than half a million guests between Australia and Bali, and it’s great to see demand for the destination continue to grow.”
The Gateway Reimagined
For Canberra Airport, the arrival of Virgin’s international wing is a massive validation of its long-term growth strategy. While the airport currently hosts Fiji Airways and Qatar Airways (the latter via Melbourne), Virgin’s presence represents the first domestic powerhouse to commit to an international hub in the capital.
“Bali is one of Australia’s most popular international holiday destinations, and we know this service will be warmly welcomed by travellers across the region,” said Stephen Byron, CEO of Canberra Airport. “We’re delighted to be expanding our network with Virgin Australia and introducing Virgin Australia’s first international service from Canberra.”

Flight Schedule and Operations
The service is designed as a "leisure-first" schedule, featuring afternoon departures from the capital to allow for a full morning at home or work, and overnight "red-eye" returns to maximise holiday time.
| Flight No. | Route | Departure Time | Arrival Time | Duration | Operating Days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VA127 | Canberra (CBR) – Bali (DPS) | 4:10 PM | 8:55 PM | 6h 45m | Mon, Wed, Sat |
| VA128 | Bali (DPS) – Canberra (CBR) | 9:45 PM | 5:35 AM (+1) | 5h 50m | Mon, Wed, Sat |
Note: Saturday outbound (VA127) departs slightly earlier at 3:20 PM.
The "Sale" Effect
To celebrate the launch, Virgin Australia has triggered a "Bali Bonanza" fare frenzy. Until February 3, 2026, return Economy Lite fares are being offered from $399, while Business Class begins at $1,449.
Industry analysts suggest that this route will not only serve the 400,000 residents of the ACT but also capture a significant portion of the surrounding regional NSW market, including Queanbeyan and the South Coast, who find the Canberra terminal significantly more accessible than the congestion of Sydney’s Mascot.
