Unruly Passenger Restrained After Fighting With Crew on Emirates Flight to Islamabad

On February 24, an unruly passenger forced the cabin crew to intervene because of his violent actions on an Emirates Boeing B777-300 ER. The crew restrained him using cable ties during Emirates flight EK 614 from Dubai (DXB) to Islamabad (ISB). Emirates also confirmed the event's occurrence in an official statement.

The Incident

The aggressive passenger who was portraying aggressive actions was described by a witness as "drunk" and "extremely violent," as explained by Amir Mateen, a Pakistani journalist who published the footage of the incident online. The passenger was subdued by the crew and, with the assistance of the passengers onboard, tackled to the ground. The footage also shows the man detained in an airport wheelchair after the flight lands, even though the whereabouts are not certain.

Amir Mateen said in the caption of his post on X, formerly known as Twitter:

"This happened on a Dubai flight to Islamabad this morning. Sent by a passenger who remained terrified during the flight: 'Drunk guy extremely violent. Restrained and handcuffed by the Emirates cabin crew but I think Pak authorities let him go as he was well connected,'"

An Emirates spokesperson said about the incident:

"Emirates can confirm that there was an unruly passenger on flight EK614 traveling from Dubai to Islamabad. The passenger was restrained by cabin crew upon arrival, was handed over to authorities. The safety of our passengers and crew ıs of critical importance and Emirates strives to ensure this is never compromised. Emirates is cooperating with the authorities at this time and cannot comment further."

The reason for the restraint caused the passenger to head-butt a male crew member, causing him to tackle the passenger onto the ground. Then, with the assistance of a female cabin crew, he possessed hand ties, helping him to restrain the unruly individual.

Other Incidents Involving Unruly Passengers

Several incidents have occurred that have been reported in the past few months. Earlier this month, two men were detained after a fight ensued between them midair on a Southwest Airlines flight from California to Hawaii, causing both the passengers and the crew distress. In December, a man was detained on a Spirit Airlines flight from Colombia to Miami after attempting to punch police officers.

Airlines worldwide are dealing with an increase of unruly passengers disturbing the course of the operation while causing emotional distress to everyone onboard. According to the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) report from July 2023, there has been an increase in unruly passenger incidents. In 2022, stats show that one of every 568 flights had an incident linked to an unruly passenger, while it was one of every 835 flights in 2021.

UAE-based airline crew members are trained for the possible situations of dealing with an unruly passenger. However, more crucial than the training, the present and future passengers should avoid such violent acts or potential causes from the start so as not to disturb the course of the operation and cause distress to the crew and the other passengers.
