The newly-acquired A350-1000 entered service the following day, operating on key routes to destinations including Dubai and Abuja. With seating for 46 passengers in Business Class and 349 in Economy, the aircraft offers a superior level of comfort and efficiency for travelers.

In November 2024, Ethiopian Airlines introduced its first A350-1000 (ET-BAW), becoming the first African carrier to operate the A35K. The addition of ET-BAX marks another milestone for the airline, which now operates a total of 20 A350-900s. Ethiopian anticipates the delivery of 11 additional A350-900s starting in 2027, along with two more A350-1000s.

The airline's expansion of its A350 fleet follows a decision made in July 2022 to convert an order of four A350-900s to the larger A350-1000 variant. Furthermore, Ethiopian Airlines reinforced its Airbus partnership by signing a memorandum of understanding during the Dubai Air Show on November 15, 2023, for 11 additional A350-900s.

Ethiopian Airlines has also strengthened its relationship with Boeing. Its upcoming fleet includes eleven 787-9s (with options for 15 more), twenty 737 MAX 8s (with options for 21 additional units), and eight 777-9X aircraft, making it the first African carrier to acquire the Boeing 777X. Ethiopian's long-haul Boeing fleet is already robust, featuring six Boeing 777-200(LR)s, four 777-300(ER)s, nineteen 787-8s, and ten 787-9s.

The Airbus A350-1000, equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, offers a 25% improvement in fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions compared to previous-generation widebody aircraft. Ethiopian Airlines has also opted for the cargo variant of the A350, enhancing its operational capabilities. Passengers aboard Ethiopian’s A350-1000s will benefit from GX Aviation broadband, provided through Airbus' Airspace Link HBCplus program, ensuring seamless internet connectivity on every flight.

Regional Context

Beyond Ethiopian Airlines, Air Algérie is the only other African airline to order the A350-1000. Air Algérie finalized its contract for two A350-1000s on May 31, 2023, and expects delivery between 2025 and 2026.
