GTON, D.C. – In a historic pivot for Western Hemisphere aviation, American Airlines has today, January 29, 2026, announced its intention to resume nonstop commercial service to Venezuela. The move follows a directive from the White House to reopen commercial airspace between the two nations for the first time since the indefinite suspension of flights in May 2019.
The announcement comes just weeks after a dramatic shift in the Venezuelan political landscape, following a U.S. military operation that led to the capture of Nicolás Maduro. With the regional security situation stabilising, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has been instructed to begin the process of rescinding Order 2019-5-5, which previously barred all scheduled passenger and cargo flights to the country.
A Landmark Diplomatic and Operational Shift
President Donald Trump officially signalled the reopening of the airspace during a cabinet meeting on Thursday morning.
“American citizens will be very shortly able to go to Venezuela, and they'll be safe there,” the President stated, adding that he had instructed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and military leaders to finalise the reopening by the end of the day.
American Airlines, which was the last U.S. carrier to serve the market before the 2019 lockout, was the first to confirm its return. The carrier intends to leverage its primary gateway at Miami International Airport (MIA) to restore vital links to Caracas (CCS) and eventually Maracaibo (MAR).

American Airlines' Strategic Vision
For American Airlines, the return to Venezuela is more than just a route expansion; it is the restoration of a legacy market. At its peak, American was the largest U.S. operator in the country, even maintaining a dedicated Admirals Club in the capital city.
Nat Pieper, American’s Chief Commercial Officer, emphasised the human and economic impact of the decision:
We have a more than 30-year history connecting Venezuelans to the U.S., and we are ready to renew that incredible relationship. By restarting service to Venezuela, American will offer customers the opportunity to reunite with families and create new business and commerce with the United States.
While the airline is still finalising security assessments and awaiting formal FAA and DOT clearances, industry insiders expect a phased relaunch to begin as early as March 2026.

Security and Safety First
Despite the high level of enthusiasm from the Venezuelan diaspora in South Florida, the U.S. State Department maintains a cautious stance. While the airspace is reopening, officials are working closely with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to regain access to Venezuelan airports for required security assessments.
Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the administration’s readiness to move quickly:
“Airlines are informed, and will update their schedules quickly.”
As American Airlines prepares its Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX fleet for the return to Maiquetía International Airport, the industry watches closely to see if competitors like United or Delta will follow suit in the coming weeks.
