American Airlines announced various changes to its domestic network as it works to address demand in multiple markets properly. The carrier will add four routes and cut two others as it plans for the busy Summer 2025 season.
Cape Cod Growth
American launched its first-ever service to Cape Cod in June 2024 with seasonal services from New York LaGuardia (LGA) and Washington Reagan (DCA). Both routes were to Hyannis' Cape Cod Gateway Airport (HYA) located right on the peninsula.
Cape Cod is a popular vacation destination during the summer and much of the traffic there primarily goes into Boston (BOS) or Nantucket (ACK). Nantucket specifically sees most of its airline service during the summer period.
However, Hyannis Airport has grown in popularity as the only airport located directly on Cape Cod. As such, American is adding two new seasonal routes to Philadelphia (PHL) and Chicago O'Hare (ORD).
The new Philadelphia - Hyannis service will run daily starting on June 19th, 2025 while the Chicago route will launch on June 21st and run on Saturdays only. Both routes will be operated by the Embraer 175 under American's regional subsidiary Envoy Air.
American has not specified when the routes will end for the season. However, it is great news for Hyannis and travelers headed there.
Before American's arrival last summer, JetBlue was the only major airline serving Hyannis with seasonal service from New York Kennedy (JFK). That service launched in the Summer of 2023.
Aside from that, Hyannis Airport is the main base for both Cape Air and Nantucket Airlines. Cape Air operates to Boston, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard with a seasonal route to JFK, while Nantucket Airlines serves both its namesake and Martha's Vineyard.
Growth and Cuts
In addition to the two new flights to Hyannis, American will launch two new "limited-time" routes for the Spring Break 2025 period. These will be from both Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (MDT) and Springfield, Missouri (SGF) to Miami (MIA).
Both routes will run from February 15th, 2025, to March 29th, 2025. It's unclear if these will be operated by American's mainline aircraft or a regional subsidiary. Given these are limited routes and ones that are not expected to be busy, American may operate these through Envoy Air and its Embraer 175s.
These routes will only operate on Saturdays. There is a possibility that they may be extended following the Spring Break period, however, this will be decided after both routes launch.
Unfortunately, American will also cut two routes with these recent network changes. Two seasonal markets will be cut after underwhelming performances in the past summer period.
These routes are Charlotte (CLT) to Spokane, Washington (GEG) and Chicago to Reno, Nevada (RNO). As mentioned earlier, American was only flying these routes during the summer season and it appears that neither performed well enough to be resumed next season.
Airlines are constantly analyzing where people want to fly. If one route or destination sees a spike in popularity, airlines will rush to add new flights.
On the contrary, if a certain route or destination sees a massive drop in visitors, you can bet that airlines will adjust their schedules or cut flights entirely to focus on more popular markets.
