American Airlines Has Just Opened Four New Nonstop Routes to Europe

American Airlines touched down in European cities it had never served nonstop before, and returned to one it had abandoned for eight years, as four new transatlantic routes took off simultaneously on May 21, 2026, marking the opening day of the carrier's record summer 2026 schedule. The four inaugural flights connected Philadelphia to Budapest and Prague, and Dallas-Fort Worth to Athens and Zurich, putting American into a stronger position across Central and Southern Europe just as demand for transatlantic travel peaks ahead of the summer season.

American Airlines on Thursday launched four new nonstop routes to Europe ahead of what is expected to be a busy summer travel season. The carrier started seasonal service from Philadelphia to Budapest and Prague, and from Dallas/Fort Worth to Athens and Zurich. Officials said the new connections will bolster Philadelphia's position as a transatlantic gateway and expand travel options between Texas and Europe.

The inaugural flights took off on Thursday, marking the first day of American's record summer 2026 schedule, and strengthening their European network with up to 70 daily flights from the US.

Philadelphia to Budapest

Of the four routes, the Philadelphia–Budapest service carries the most historic weight. American has not previously served Budapest or Prague. No US carrier has ever flown nonstop between the United States and Hungary, making American's new Philadelphia–Budapest service a genuine aviation first for both countries. The route fills a gap that had long forced the 1.5 million Hungarian-Americans concentrated in the Cleveland, New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago areas to connect through European hubs, primarily via Lufthansa in Frankfurt or SWISS in Zurich, to reach their destination.

The service operates daily on a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner in a three-class configuration of 20 Flagship Business lie-flat suites, 28 Premium Economy recliners, and 186 Economy seats. The seasonal schedule runs through October 5, 2026, giving passengers a full summer and early autumn window to make use of the new connection.

Philadelphia to Prague

The Prague route carries a different kind of significance, the restoration of a service that American once operated but suspended and never revived. Philadelphia to Prague marks a return of seasonal service, summer seasonal service starts May 21, 2026, on 787-8. The gap between the suspension and this resumption stretches back eight years, during which Prague, one of Central Europe's most visited cities, was only reachable from the US via a connection.

Like Budapest, Prague is operated with the Boeing 787-8 on a daily seasonal basis through October 5. Prague remains one of Europe's most romantic cities, and with both Budapest and Prague now served from Philadelphia, travelers can fly into one city and out of the other via American's new Philadelphia routes. The train journey between the two capitals takes under seven hours, making the pair of routes an appealing combination for travellers planning a Central European itinerary.

Philadelphia International Airport currently provides nonstop access to more than 120 destinations worldwide, including 19 transatlantic destinations. American Airlines increased coordinated daily arrival and departure periods, known as flight banks, from 6 to 7. The updated scheduling structure spreads flights more evenly throughout the day and improves movement across multiple airport operations.

Dallas-Fort Worth to Athens

The Dallas–Athens route adds DFW to a small list of US airports with nonstop access to the Greek capital. It already serves Zurich from Philadelphia and Athens from New York-JFK, Philadelphia, Chicago O'Hare, and Charlotte, North Carolina. With Dallas now added to that group, Athens gains its fifth nonstop link with the US, underlining how Greece has become one of the most consistently high-demand European leisure markets for American travellers. The carrier will use Boeing 787-8 aircraft for flights to Budapest and Prague, and a mix of 777-300ERs and 777-200ERs for service from DFW to Athens and Zurich.

The 6,259-mile flight is blocked at 11 hours 40 minutes eastbound and 13 hours 25 minutes westbound, reflecting the demanding nature of the route and the value of the wide-body aircraft deployed on it. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport currently provides access to more than 230 nonstop destinations across the airline's network. The addition of Athens and Zurich services further expands international connectivity and strengthens the role of Dallas-Fort Worth as a major connection point for global travel.

Dallas-Fort Worth to Zurich

The fourth route, Dallas to Zurich, is the most time-restricted of the group and the most candidly targeted at a single audience. Between May 21 and August 4, 2026, American will offer the only nonstop service connecting DFW and ZRH. Special for global soccer fans, American will launch a limited-time service between DFW and Zurich and offer expanded summer service from DFW and MIA to Buenos Aires. Flights from Argentina and Switzerland will connect soccer fans to Dallas-Fort Worth for the world's premier sporting event.

Switzerland, with its historically passionate football following, is a significant source of fans travelling to the FIFA World Cup 2026, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico this summer, with Texas serving as a major venue state. The DFW–ZRH route's window of May 21 to August 4 brackets the tournament schedule precisely. Operated on a Boeing 777-200ER, the 5,240-mile service is blocked at 10 hours eastbound and 11 hours 15 minutes westbound.

The Strategy and the Statement Behind the Expansion

American's Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning, Brian Znotins, framed the broader motivation at the time of the announcement:

"Customers continue to tell us that Europe is where they want to go each summer and these new routes make it even easier to cross the Atlantic in 2026. We are excited to grow our network to new destinations like Prague and Budapest and offer even more premium travel experiences on our flights to Tokyo."

The four routes sit within a wider 2026 summer expansion that also includes year-round Miami–Milan service launched in March, and extended seasonal coverage to Buenos Aires. American is conscious, however, of its capacity constraints; its A321XLR fleet entry has been subject to delays, and the airline is managing its network expansion around available widebody assets. The deployment of 787-8s and 777s on these new routes reflects that pragmatic approach: proven aircraft on commercially important new paths rather than an overextension of still-arriving narrowbody equipment.
