On March 23, 2023, Air China flight CA1550 did something that surprised everyone onboard.

Flight CA1550, a regularly scheduled passenger flight between Beijing (PEK) and Shanghai (PVG) experienced a 90-minute delay because the captain decided to reject the takeoff and return to the gate due to a passenger who had forgotten his phone in the terminal.

Another passenger on the flight, Mr. Pan from Beijing, was onboard and shared details about the admittedly curious events on his social media channels. According to Mr. Pan, the flight was lined up on the runway for takeoff and was moving when the aircraft suddenly turned off the runway and began taxiing back towards the terminal building.

Mr. Pan, quite confused, asked the flight attendants what had happened since no announcement came from the flight deck about the aborted departure. It is very possible other passengers were also quite confused and perhaps nervous after such an event. At any rate, Mr. Pan reported that once the aircraft was safely parked at the gate, the door was open for another half hour with no announcements from the flight or cabin crew as to the reason why.

Understandably, many passengers became restless and began to gaggle around the lead flight attendant in hopes of answers. However, the crew didn't have any details, other than the fact that a passenger had voluntarily exited the aircraft to retrieve his mobile phone from the terminal.

At this point, the police had been called, and five or six other passengers had also deplaned, voluntarily ending their trip. When the police arrived, they chastised the cabin crew, reprimanding them for engaging in conflict as opposed to reassuring and calming the distressed passengers.

Mr. Pan had a follow-up conversation with Air China customer service several days later, on 31 March, which he recalled lasting an hour and a half. He reported that they were unhelpful, refusing to provide compensation for the flight delay or for losses. They also reportedly claimed that in the event of a potential incident, the captain has the final say.

The only thing offered was an apology, to which Mr. Pan says is "unacceptable".

According to numerous public reports in China, flights do return to the gate from time to time for numerous reasons such as technical malfunctions or ill passengers. However, returning to the gate for a forgotten mobile phone is not something the airline had ever done before. Industry experts investigating the incident have concluded that the airline and flight crew complied with all necessary regulations.
