United Airlines has quietly started allowing passengers to change their flights for free if they want to avoid an airport recently renamed after President Donald Trump. The policy applies to travelers booked to or from Palm Beach International Airport, which is at the center of a renaming push tied to the president.

The move comes after Florida lawmakers advanced a proposal to rename Palm Beach International Airport as "Donald J. Trump Palm Beach International Airport." The facility sits near Mar-a-Lago, Trump's private club and Florida residence. Reports indicate that a growing number of travelers have expressed reluctance to fly through an airport bearing the president's name.

What United Is Offering

According to reports from multiple travel outlets, United Airlines is waiving change fees and fare differences for passengers who no longer want to fly into or out of Palm Beach International. Travelers can switch to nearby airports, including Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International and Miami International, without paying extra.

The waiver reportedly covers tickets already booked for travel through the coming months. Passengers who want to take advantage of the policy need to contact United directly rather than making changes through the airline's website or app.

United has not issued a formal public statement explaining the policy shift. The airline has typically reserved fee waivers for weather disruptions, natural disasters, or major operational problems. Extending that courtesy over an airport name change marks an unusual step.

Why Travelers Are Pushing Back

The renaming effort has drawn criticism from residents and travelers who view it as a political statement rather than a routine honor. Palm Beach County officials have voiced concerns about the state overriding local authority on airport naming. The airport is owned and operated by Palm Beach County, and county commissioners have not endorsed the change.

Some travelers have said publicly they will avoid the airport entirely rather than have boarding passes, luggage tags, or itineraries stamped with Trump's name. Others have raised worries about how the renaming could affect the airport's brand recognition among international visitors.

South Florida offers travelers multiple alternatives within reasonable driving distance. Fort Lauderdale sits roughly 45 miles south of Palm Beach, while Miami International is about 70 miles away. Both airports handle significantly more traffic than Palm Beach and offer broader flight options.

The Business Side

For United, accommodating these requests likely costs less than dealing with unhappy customers or lost bookings. Palm Beach International is not one of United's major hubs, and the airline operates limited service there compared to competitors like Delta, JetBlue, and American Airlines.

The airline's decision also carries reputational considerations. By quietly offering waivers rather than announcing a formal policy, United avoids taking a public political stance while still giving customers flexibility. That approach lets the carrier sidestep controversy from either side of the political spectrum.

Other major airlines have not publicly announced similar policies. Whether Delta, American, JetBlue, or Southwest will follow United's lead remains unclear. Each of those carriers operates more flights out of Palm Beach than United does, meaning any similar policy could carry higher costs for them.

The Renaming Process

Renaming a commercial airport typically requires coordination between local operators, the Federal Aviation Administration, and various agencies that update charts, signs, and databases. The three-letter airport code, PBI, would likely remain unchanged even if the full name is updated.

Florida legislators supporting the renaming have framed it as an honor for the president, who has spent significant time at Mar-a-Lago before, during, and after his terms in office. Opponents argue that airports named after sitting politicians can create confusion and may not age well if political circumstances shift.

Palm Beach International handles roughly 7 million passengers per year, making it a mid-sized facility by U.S. standards. It serves as a gateway for tourists visiting Palm Beach and the surrounding communities, as well as business travelers with ties to the wealthy enclaves along Florida's Atlantic coast.

What Passengers Should Know

If you have a United flight booked to or from Palm Beach International and want to change airports, call the airline directly. Be prepared to explain your request. Reports suggest agents have been accommodating, though experiences may vary depending on availability and specific ticket types.

Travelers on other airlines who want similar flexibility should check with their carrier's customer service. Standard change fees and fare differences typically apply unless a specific waiver has been issued.

The situation continues to develop as the renaming proposal moves through the Florida legislature. Whether the change will officially take effect, and how airlines and travelers respond in the long term, remains to be seen.
