WestJet First Boeing 737 MAX 10 Completes Maiden Flight Marking New Era for Canadian Aviation

Aviation enthusiasts and industry analysts focused their sights on the skies over Washington state this week as the first Boeing 737 MAX 10 destined for WestJet successfully completed its maiden test flight. The aircraft, registered as C-FMWY, departed from Renton Municipal Airport on March 2, 2026, signaling a major milestone for the Calgary-based carrier as it prepares to become the global launch operator for the largest variant of the MAX family.

This successful sortie comes at a critical juncture for Boeing, which has been navigating the rigorous Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Phase 2 Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) process. The sighting of the WestJet-liveried "Dash 10" confirms that production and testing for customer-specific airframes have resumed in earnest, providing a much-needed boost to the program's momentum.

A Pivot to Passenger Comfort

While the MAX 10 was originally conceptualized to carry up to 230 passengers in a high-density configuration, WestJet has made headlines by opting for a more spacious cabin. Following feedback regarding densification on its existing fleet, the airline finalized a 199-seat layout for its MAX 10 fleet, featuring four lavatories and an enhanced "cabin of the future" experience.

WestJet currently holds approximately 96 firm orders for the MAX 10, following a strategic conversion of six units into Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners earlier this February to support its burgeoning long-haul network. The MAX 10 is intended to be the "backbone" of WestJet's domestic and transborder growth, offering roughly 20% better fuel efficiency per seat compared to previous-generation aircraft.

Alexis von Hoensbroech, CEO of WestJet, recently reaffirmed the airline's commitment to the platform despite the lengthy certification journey. In a statement to Reuters, von Hoensbroech noted:

“We are pretty confident that this is moving forward, and that's what we also hear from Boeing. The delivery schedule foresees that we will receive our first MAX 10 in Q4 2026.”

Strategic Expansion and 2026 Operational Outlook

The maiden flight of C-FMWY coincides with WestJet’s most ambitious summer schedule to date. While the MAX 10 is slated for a late-year entry into service, the airline is already laying the groundwork for high-capacity growth with new nonstop routes to Europe and South America.

The following table details newly authorized and announced air operations for the 2026 season, reflecting the network density that the MAX 10 will eventually support.

The Road to Certification

The 737 MAX 10’s path to commercial service has been defined by increased regulatory oversight. Boeing is currently finalizing the redesign of the engine anti-ice system, a key technical hurdle that has delayed the variant. However, the commencement of customer flight tests suggests that Boeing has achieved high confidence in the final certification credits required by Transport Canada and the FAA.

Industry analysts suggest that the MAX 10 will be a "game changer" for WestJet’s ability to compete at slot-constrained airports like Toronto Pearson and Vancouver International, where maximizing passenger count per departure is vital. As the test program for C-FMWY continues throughout the spring, the global aviation community remains watchful, anticipating the moment this "stretch" 737 finally carries its first paying passengers across the Canadian Rockies.
