United Airlines Takes Delivery of First Aircraft Powered by Pratt & Whitney's GTF Advantage Engine

United Airlines has taken delivery of the first commercial aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney's GTF Advantage engine, marking a milestone for the upgraded powerplant after years of development and certification work.

The aircraft, an Airbus A321XLR, makes United the launch operator for the new engine variant. Pratt & Whitney, a business of RTX, and United marked the delivery on September 24, 2026, with reporting indicating Airbus physically handed over the aircraft a day earlier, on September 23.

What the GTF Advantage Brings

The GTF Advantage is an upgraded version of Pratt & Whitney's geared turbofan engine family, which powers a portion of the Airbus A320neo family fleet worldwide. According to Pratt & Whitney, the engine delivers 4% to 8% more takeoff thrust than the existing GTF model, enabling longer range capability, and features what the company describes as the most advanced hot section in the single-aisle engine market.

On durability, Pratt & Whitney's headline claim is substantial: the GTF Advantage is designed to deliver up to twice the time on wing compared to today's GTF engine. That matters given the durability issues that have grounded hundreds of GTF-powered aircraft in recent years, forcing airlines to pull planes from service for inspections and repairs.

The added thrust and range capability are particularly relevant for the A321XLR, the long-range narrowbody variant used for United's first Advantage-powered aircraft.

United's Position

United Airlines originally selected the GTF engine in June 2023 to power a firm order of 120 aircraft, split between 70 A321neo and 50 A321XLR jets. Taking the first GTF Advantage-powered aircraft places United at the front of the queue for the upgraded engine and extends a relationship between the two companies that Pratt & Whitney describes as spanning nearly a century.

said Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney. 

United will be the first to benefit from the world-class efficiency, durability and additional thrust capability of the GTF Advantage engine, which is particularly well-suited to the long-range A321XLR.

Ankit Gupta, United's Senior Vice President and Chief Air Operations Officer, said Pratt & Whitney has been a key supplier throughout the companies' shared history, and that GTF-powered aircraft are helping the airline reduce fuel burn and improve reliability as it adds new destinations around the world.

Certification and Rollout

The GTF Advantage received FAA certification last year, clearing the way for commercial deliveries. The engine is fully intermixable and interchangeable with the current GTF, meaning airlines can mix the two variants within their existing operations without major changes to maintenance procedures or spare parts inventories.

Pratt & Whitney has faced significant challenges with its GTF program in recent years. 

A powder metal contamination issue discovered in 2023 led to accelerated inspections of high-pressure turbine and compressor components, removing hundreds of engines from service and creating ripple effects across airline schedules worldwide. Carriers including Wizz Air, Lufthansa, and JetBlue reported grounded aircraft as a result.

What Comes Next

With the first aircraft now in United's hands, attention turns to how the engine performs in daily commercial service. Airlines and lessors watching the program will be looking at real-world fuel burn, dispatch reliability, and time-on-wing numbers over the coming months.

Other operators of the A320neo family that have selected the GTF are expected to receive Advantage-powered aircraft in the coming period as production ramps up toward the 2028 full transition target. Pratt & Whitney competes with CFM International, the joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran, which offers the LEAP-1A engine as the alternative choice on the A320neo family.

For passengers, the change will not be visible from the cabin. For airlines, the calculation involves fuel savings, maintenance costs, and reliability, all of which will be tested as the Advantage begins flying revenue routes with United.
