United Airlines Cancels Planned Denver 9/11 Flyover Featuring Boeing 777 and F-16 Escorts

United Airlines has canceled a planned September 11 tribute flyover over Denver that would have featured a Boeing 777 widebody jet flying at low altitude flanked by four U.S. Air Force F-16 fighter jets.

The carrier had intended to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks with a dramatic aerial display over Denver International Airport. The formation would have included one of the airline's Boeing 777 aircraft escorted by four F-16 fighters from the Colorado Air National Guard.

United confirmed the cancellation on September 10, 2026, one day before the planned event. The airline did not provide a detailed public explanation for pulling the plug, though the decision followed growing concern about the optics and safety of staging such a maneuver on the anniversary of an attack in which hijacked commercial jets were used as weapons.

What the Airline Planned

United had scheduled the flyover to coincide with commemorative events at its Denver hub, one of the airline's largest operations. The Boeing 777, a long-haul widebody typically used on international routes, would have flown at low altitude over the airport property alongside the fighter escort.

The Colorado Air National Guard's 140th Wing, based at Buckley Space Force Base, was set to provide the four F-16 Fighting Falcons for the formation. Military flyovers featuring fighter escorts are common at sporting events and memorial ceremonies, but pairing them with a commercial widebody airliner is unusual.

The event was designed as a tribute to the victims of the September 11 attacks and to honor the airline employees and passengers who lost their lives that day. United Airlines lost two aircraft in the 2001 attacks, Flight 175 and Flight 93, along with all crew members and passengers on board.

Concerns Over the Display

The announcement of the planned flyover drew mixed reactions from the public, aviation observers, and community members in the Denver area. Critics questioned whether a low-altitude pass by a commercial jetliner escorted by fighter aircraft was an appropriate way to commemorate an attack in which commercial aircraft were deliberately crashed into buildings.

Others raised practical concerns about operational safety, noise impact on surrounding neighborhoods, and potential disruption to regular flight operations at one of the busiest airports in the United States. Denver International Airport handles hundreds of daily arrivals and departures, and coordinating a low-altitude formation flight would have required significant airspace management.

The airline had reportedly spent weeks planning the event, coordinating with the Federal Aviation Administration, the Department of Defense, and airport officials.

United's Response

United Airlines confirmed that the tribute would not proceed as originally planned. The airline indicated it would still mark the anniversary through other observances, including moments of silence and internal memorial events for employees.

The carrier has a long history of commemorating September 11. Each year, United employees gather at various locations, including the crash sites in New York, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to pay respects to those who died. The airline also maintains memorials at its facilities honoring the flight crews of Flight 175 and Flight 93.

The Aircraft Involved

The Boeing 777 that would have participated is a twin-engine widebody jet capable of carrying between 300 and 400 passengers depending on configuration. United operates one of the largest fleets of 777 aircraft in the world, using them primarily on transpacific and transatlantic routes.

Low-altitude passes by widebody commercial aircraft are extremely rare outside of airshow environments or specific ceremonial occasions. When they do occur, they require extensive coordination and specialized crew training. The Boeing 777, despite its size, is capable of precise handling and has been used in similar demonstrations at aviation events.

The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine multirole fighter that has been in service with the U.S. Air Force since the late 1970s. The Colorado Air National Guard operates F-16s from Buckley Space Force Base and regularly participates in flyovers and public events across the region.

A Sensitive Anniversary

The September 11, 2001 attacks killed nearly 3,000 people when hijackers commandeered four commercial aircraft. Two were flown into the World Trade Center towers in New York, one struck the Pentagon in Virginia, and a fourth crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to retake the aircraft.

The attacks fundamentally reshaped commercial aviation. They led to the creation of the Transportation Security Administration, hardened cockpit doors, expanded federal air marshal programs, and introduced screening procedures that remain in place today.

For airlines, particularly United and American, which each lost two aircraft in the attacks, the anniversary carries deep personal significance. Employees at both carriers have described the day as a permanent part of their institutional memory.

Looking Ahead

While the Denver flyover will not take place, other 9/11 commemorations across the country will proceed as planned. Ceremonies at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York, the Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania will draw thousands of attendees, including family members of victims, first responders, and government officials.

United Airlines has not indicated whether it will attempt a similar tribute flyover in future years or pursue alternative ways to mark significant anniversaries connected to the attacks.
