United Airlines Baggage Policy 2026: Fees, Sizes & Pro Tips

United Airlines Baggage Policy 2026: Fees, Sizes & Pro Tips

Navigating airline baggage rules can often feel like solving a complex puzzle. For United Airlines in 2026, the policy is structured around your destination, fare class, and loyalty status.

Carry-on Bag Allowances

United distinguishes between a personal item and a full-size carry-on bag.

Item TypeMax DimensionsCost
Personal Item17 x 10 x 9 in (43 x 25 x 22 cm)Free for all passengers
Full-size Carry-on22 x 14 x 9 in (56 x 35 x 23 cm)Free (except Basic Economy*)

The Basic Economy Exception

If you are traveling on a Basic Economy ticket for a domestic or short-haul international flight (Canada, Mexico, Caribbean), you are only permitted one personal item.

Gate Fees: If you bring a full-size carry-on to the gate, you will be charged the applicable checked bag fee plus a $25 gate handling fee.

Long-haul Perk: Basic Economy passengers on trans-Atlantic or trans-Pacific flights are still permitted one free full-size carry-on.

Checked Baggage Fees & Limits

For most standard Economy tickets within the U.S., the following fees apply. You can often save $5 per bag by prepaying at least 24 hours before your flight via the United app or website.

Standard Domestic Fees (Prepaid / Airport)

1st Bag: $35 / $40

2nd Bag: $45 / $50

3rd+ Bag: $150+ per bag

Weight and Size Requirements

Max Weight: 50 lbs (23 kg) for Economy; 70 lbs (32 kg) for Business, First, and Polaris.

Max Size: 62 linear inches (Length + Width + Height).

Pro Tip: United now offers an automated Baggage Calculator on its website. Since international fees vary wildly by route (e.g., the first bag is often free to Europe but costs $75 for Basic Economy), it is the most reliable tool for your specific itinerary.

Special Items: Sports & Music

United is relatively friendly toward hobbyists, provided items are packed correctly.

Surfboards: The standard $100 fee is waived for flights to or from California (up to two bags).

Bicycles: Oversize fees are waived for properly packed non-motorized bicycles.

Golf Clubs: One set in a hard-sided case counts as a standard checked bag.

Musical Instruments: Small instruments can be carry-ons if they fit in the bin. Larger ones can be checked, with a weight limit of 165 lbs (additional fees apply).

Status and Credit Card Perks

One of the easiest ways to bypass fees is through MileagePlus status or co-branded Chase credit cards.

  • United Gateway/Explorer Card: Typically grants the first checked bag free for the primary cardmember and one companion.
  • United Quest/Club Cards: Usually grant the first and second bags free.

With United status:

  • Premier Silver: 1 free bag (up to 70 lbs).
  • Premier Gold: 2 free bags (up to 70 lbs).
  • Premier Platinum/1K: 3 free bags (up to 70 lbs).

Modern Tracking & Claims (New for 2026)

United has integrated several high-tech features into their mobile app to reduce "baggage anxiety":

Real-time Tracking: A "package-delivery-style" tracker shows exactly when your bag is scanned onto the plane and when it hits the carousel.

AirTag Integration: You can now share your Apple AirTag location directly with United’s baggage team through the app if your bag is mishandled.

Automatic Refunds: Per DOT regulations, if your bag is "significantly delayed" (12 hours for domestic, 15–30 for international), United is required to automatically refund your baggage fees.
