Future Fleet - Boeing 737 MAX

Between March and June 2023, Luxair had already placed orders for four Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. Now, the airline has committed to ordering four Boeing 737 MAX 7 aircraft from Boeing, all but ensuring that the airlines future fleet will be composed of primarily Boeing aircraft. Of the four 737 MAX 8s Luxair has ordered, two have already been leased and will be delivered to the Luxembourgish carrier in the summer season 2023.

This agreement with Boeing has secured Luxair as the European the launch customer for the Boeing 737 MAX 7.

While Luxair will receive the 737 MAX 8s it has on order within three years, it is unclear when the airline's newly ordered MAX 7s will be delivered due to the aircraft not experiencing any production run yet. This follows issues that Boeing has with the aircraft with regulators regarding documentation and pilot alert systems onboard.

Even with these problems, executives at Luxair are content with the order, as evidenced by Gillles Feith, CEO of the airline. "We continue to invest in Luxair's growth and this agreement for four Boeing 737-7 is an extra step towards securing a long term future for our national [Luxembourgish] airline. This type of aircraft is a perfect match for Luxair and will meet the requirements of the market. Seating 160 passengers, the 737-7 will offer flexibility across the Luxair destination network while significantly reducing fuel consumption. This will help us get even closer to our commitment to sustainable flights, while demonstrating once again our support to the promise of "Net-Zero carbon emissions by 2050" submitted by IATA.

"...By selecting the 737-7 Luxair will operate a common fleet allowing it to move aircraft around the network based, increasing and dropping capacity based on seasonality and demand, ensuring maximum profitability flying all year round." states Brad McMullen, Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing at Boeing, in regard to the order.

About Luxair

The airline is the flag carrier of the small European country of Luxembourg. Since it's establishment in 1961, the airline has been utilizing a hub-and-spoke model out of its Luxembourg Findel Airport (LUX) hub. Currently, the airline has a fleet of 22 aircraft with the primary aircraft being the Bombardier DASH 8 Q400, of which the airline has 11.

The rest of Luxair's fleet comprises of 2 Embraer E190 aircraft, 4 Boeing 737-700s, 4 Boeing 737-800s, and 1 Boeing 737 MAX 8, which the airline has just received from a lessor as part of its agreement to the four 737 MAX 8s the airline has on order. The addition of the 737 MAX to Luxair's fleet will allow the airline to fly to further destinations and expand the airline's route network. The Boeing 737 MAX is set to replace a portion of the Luxair's rapidly aging Bombardier DASH 8 Q400 fleet.
