Fort Worth-based American Airlines announced a big Italian-focused network expansion for summer 2025, including four brand-new or expanded routes.
American’s 2 Brand-New Italy Routes
Expanding its footprint in Italy’s 3rd largest city, American Airlines will become the only airline to fly nonstop between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Naples International Airport (NAP). This comes after the carrier launched its first flights to Naples this past summer, becoming the only airline connecting Philadelphia (PHL) with NAP.
With the new Naples service, American hopes to offer its customers “comprehensive access to the gateway to mouth-watering cuisine, historical ruins, and the sunshine of the Amalfi Coast,” the airline said.
will inaugurate its roughly nine-and-a-half hour ORD - NAP route with daily service beginning on May 6th, 2025.
In addition to connecting Chicago with Naples, American will offer its first-ever nonstop flight from its hub at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE). American also plans on connecting DFW with VCE daily, however, service will not begin until a month later on June 5th, 2025.
Notably, the carrier will launch both its Naples and Venice routes with one of the airline’s 37 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, configured with 234 seats split between 20 business class suites, 28 premium economy seats, and 186 coach seats.
Expanded Service on 2 More Italian Connections
Aside from announcing two exciting new routes, American Airlines is also increasing its current offerings on 2 existing or already planned routes.
Announced in September 2024 as part of a major international network expansion, American Airlines will now start its new Miami (MIA) to Rome (FCO) service a month earlier in June instead of July 2025. This will provide passengers with an extra summer month to take advantage of America’s new transatlantic connection between Florida and Italy.
The airline plans to commence daily service onboard one of its 47 Boeing 777-200s on June 5th, 2025. The aircraft, on average 24 years old, features 37 lie-flat business class seats, 24 premium economy recliners, and 212 economy class seats.
In addition, American will ramp up service on its existing Philadelphia (PHL) to Rome (FCO) route from one daily to twice daily for the summer 2025 season. Beginning on June 5th, 2025, the additional connection will be operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, adding additional capacity compared to the smaller 787-8 that currently operates the once-daily service.
With these two frequency increases from Miami and Philadelphia to Rome, American will operate more US to Rome flights than any other U.S. airline, “giving customers the flexibility to choose a schedule that gets them where they want to go when they want to go,” the airline said in a statement.
Largest-Ever American Airlines Schedule to Italy
American Airlines expects another busy summer of transatlantic travel, building upon the record-breaking numbers seen in 2024.
Speaking on the latest Italy route announcement, Brian Znotins, American Airlines’s Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning said: “As Italy continues to remain popular for summertime travel, American is making it easier than ever for customers to shop, dine, or unwind in their favorite destinations.”
“Whether reveling in the history of Rome or relaxing on a beach on the Mediterranean, American’s network will offer more ways for customers to plan their perfect itinerary.”
Continued International Growth for American Airlines
Friday’s announcements come after America announced 5 new summer 2025 European routes and a further 10 frequency increases this past September.
In September’s expansion, America announced new routes from Charlotte to Athens, Greece, Chicago to Madrid, Spain, Philadelphia to Edinburgh, Scotland and Milan, Italy, and Miami to Rome, Italy.
In 2025, America will serve Rome from six U.S. cities, including Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas, Miami, New York, and Philadelphia.
In addition, the carrier will offer flights to a whopping 19 transatlantic destinations from Philadelphia, providing its customers with one-stop connections from over 80 U.S. destinations.
