Allegiant Air Shuts Down Two Crew Bases as the Airline Braces for a Major Merger

Allegiant Air has confirmed it will permanently close crew bases at two U.S. airports: Bellingham International Airport (BLI) in Washington State and Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) in Georgia, effective November 2, 2026, as the ultra-low-cost carrier navigates a sweeping network restructuring alongside its landmark acquisition of Sun Country Airlines.

The twin closures, announced days apart in early April 2026, mark a significant contraction of Allegiant's ground-level staffing footprint, even as the airline insists that passenger-facing flight operations at both airports will remain fully intact.

A Tale of Two Bases

Bellingham: The Canadian Connection Fades

Bellingham International Airport officials were formally notified by Allegiant Air on April 1, 2026, that the airline would close its crew base in November 2026. The decision ends a chapter that stretches back more than two decades. Allegiant has served the Bellingham market since 2004, and the airport became a crew base in 2009, primarily because of the influx of Canadian passengers.

More than 100 Allegiant employees, including pilots, flight attendants and maintenance and station personnel, call the Bellingham airport base home. What happens to those workers remains an open question. Allegiant's director of corporate communications, Sonya Padgett, did not respond publicly when asked about the fate of base employees. Airport officials confirmed that crew members may be offered transfers to other bases, commuting arrangements, or may choose to leave the company.

The airline was explicit in its reasoning. Allegiant confirmed the closure in a statement: "After careful evaluation, we have made the difficult decision to close our base in Bellingham, effective Nov. 2. However, we will continue to operate the station past this date. This decision reflects changes in cross-border demand patterns and operating conditions. Please know this decision was not made lightly but is unavoidable at this time. Bellingham has long been an important part of our network, and we will continue to monitor the demand environment and adjust as market conditions evolve."

Over the last year, the airport has had to contend with fewer Canadian passengers flying out of Bellingham. That factored into Allegiant's decision to close the Bellingham crew base, according to the port. Other factors include fluctuating fuel costs, shifts in passenger demand and regional cost pressures.

Savannah: A $50 Million Investment Wound Down

The Savannah closure is perhaps the more striking of the two announcements, given the scale of resources the airline once committed to the Georgia market. Allegiant's base operations began at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in June 2019. The company invested $50 million to establish the base that housed two Airbus aircraft and created "at least 66 new, high-wage jobs." In a remarkable coincidence of timing, the original announcement for the base back in 2019 came exactly seven years prior, to the day, from the confirmation of its closure.

Allegiant confirmed it will close its aircraft base in Savannah effective November 2, citing changes in seasonal demand patterns and operating conditions for this closure. In a statement, Allegiant said:

"After careful evaluation, we have made the difficult decision to close our base in Savannah, effective Nov. 2. However, we will continue to operate the station past this date. This decision reflects changes in seasonal demand patterns and operating conditions. Please know this decision was not made lightly but is unavoidable at this time. Savannah has long been an important part of our network, and we will continue to monitor the demand environment and adjust as market conditions evolve."

With the base now slated to close, some of the economic gains tied specifically to hosting a local aircraft domicile, including hiring for pilots, mechanics and overnight maintenance work, could shrink even if flights keep coming and going at Savannah.

Passengers: No Change to Flights

Both airports have moved swiftly to reassure their communities. Bellingham International Airport confirmed that Allegiant has agreed to continue operating all existing routes and maintain its current flight schedule at BLI. Allegiant will transition to a "turn-based" model, where crews and aircraft operate routes from other bases without overnight stays in Bellingham.

Matt Rodriguez, Director of Aviation at Bellingham International Airport, was unambiguous in his public statement: "This decision is related to how Allegiant organizes its internal operations, not its commitment to the traveling public of Whatcom County. Allegiant will continue to serve BLI, and passengers will see no change to routes or service."

The Port of Bellingham acknowledged the sting of the news while remaining measured. "We've been informed of Allegiant's decision to close its base. While we're disappointed to see this change, we value the partnership we've had and the contributions their team members have made to our airport community. Allegiant will maintain a station at BLI, and our focus will be on supporting passengers and our airline partner."

Savannah's airport authorities echoed the same assurances. A Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport spokesperson stated: "Allegiant has informed us of the closing of their crew and maintenance base at SAV in November 2026. While it's not the news we expected, passengers will not be impacted as Allegiant will continue to serve Savannah/Hilton Head International with their current flight schedule."

The Broader Strategic Context

These crew base closures do not exist in isolation. They are unfolding against the backdrop of one of the most consequential deals in U.S. budget aviation history. On January 11, 2026, Sun Country announced it is combining with Allegiant to create a leading, more competitive leisure-focused U.S. airline.

Allegiant Air and Sun Country Airlines revealed a $2.1 billion all-stock transaction that would combine their complementary route networks and operational models. The merger, expected to close by late 2026 pending regulatory approval, would create an airline serving over 140 destinations with a combined fleet of approximately 180 aircraft. The new entity will retain the Allegiant name while incorporating Sun Country's charter and cargo operations into an expanded business model.

Allegiant CEO Maury Gallagher articulated the rationale: "This combination creates a unique player in American aviation. Sun Country's operational excellence and charter expertise perfectly complement our leisure-focused route network and customer base."

Allegiant's own filings this year point to reduced capacity guidance and special charges tied to restructuring and the planned Sun Country acquisition, and those factors are flagged as influences on its network decisions. The base closures, analysts note, fit neatly within a pre-merger drive to cut overhead and simplify operations ahead of the integration.

Route Adjustments Already Underway

The crew base closures are not the first signs of network tightening at Bellingham. The Bellingham–Oakland (OAK) nonstop flight operated by Allegiant will be suspended effective May 26, 2026. Rodriguez noted that over the past several months, Allegiant has eliminated multiple routes operating out of Oakland Airport, and Bellingham was the final remaining Allegiant route served from OAK.

Rodriguez confirmed the airport's frustration: "We're certainly disappointed to see the Oakland service suspended, especially given how well the route has performed historically. The Bay Area remains a very important market for Bellingham and our region." He added, “While losing a flight option is never what we want for our community, we are actively working with other airlines to restore service into the Bay Area. These discussions are constructive, and we remain optimistic about future service growth.”

Allegiant's Current Routes From Bellingham (Post-Oakland Suspension)

Based on officially confirmed operational data, the following table reflects Allegiant Air's continuing scheduled routes from Bellingham International Airport (BLI) after the Oakland suspension takes effect on May 26, 2026. Specific departure and arrival times are subject to seasonal schedule updates by the airline:

What Comes Next

Trade observers note that base closures typically shift personnel and maintenance responsibilities to other domiciles rather than immediately wiping out routes, a pattern seen in past Allegiant adjustments. For passengers at both BLI and SAV, the immediate concern is minimal. The more pressing question is what Allegiant's network looks like post-merger, and whether the turn-based operational model it is rolling out can sustain current service levels across smaller markets through seasonal peaks and troughs.

The decision reflects broader economic and industry factors affecting airlines nationwide, including fluctuating fuel costs, shifts in passenger demand, and regional cost pressures. These types of adjustments are not uncommon in the aviation industry as carriers continually optimize their networks.

For Bellingham, the closure also underscores a wider regional challenge. Rodriguez said the airport is still focused on long-term growth and is "actively working to grow air service." For Savannah, airport authorities and community leaders will be watching closely to see whether the removal of a locally-based maintenance and crew operation translates over time into any reduction in the frequency or reliability of Allegiant's service.

November 2 is now the date circled on calendars in both cities, not as a day flights end, but as the day a quieter, more distant kind of airline presence begins.
