NEWARK, NJ – As the aviation industry prepares for the peak transatlantic season, United Airlines has finalised its Summer 2026 schedule, revealing a strategic consolidation of its European network. While the Chicago-based carrier continues to claim its title as the largest U.S. airline across the Atlantic, the latest schedule filings as of February 13, 2026, confirm that several familiar frequencies and routes will be "no longer available" this summer.
The adjustments come as United balances aircraft availability with an aggressive expansion into secondary European markets. According to recent reports, the carrier is trimming roughly 1% of its previously planned capacity to optimise the use of its widebody and long-range narrowbody fleets.

"Quality Over Quantity"
The most notable casualty of the 2026 schedule is Stockholm (ARN). United has officially ended service between its Newark Liberty (EWR) hub and the Swedish capital, marking an exit from the Scandinavian market. Previously, this route represented the longest Boeing 757-operated flight in the world, but it has now been removed entirely from the network.
Beyond outright cancellations, United is reducing frequencies on high-traffic routes to Brussels, Edinburgh, Frankfurt, and Athens. In many cases, a second daily seasonal flight that operated in 2025 will not return. Patrick Quayle, United’s Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances, emphasised the airline's dominance despite these surgical cuts:
"With the addition of these new flights and the return of all of our new routes from last year, United now flies to 46 cities across the Atlantic, more than any other airline, and is the clear flag carrier of the U.S."

Where the Cuts Are Hitting Hardest
Travellers planning to visit Belgium or Scotland via Newark will find fewer options. The double-daily service to Brussels (BRU) and Edinburgh (EDI) has been halved to once-daily operations. However, the reduction in Edinburgh service is directly linked to the reintroduction of Glasgow (GLA), which returns to United’s map for the first time since 2019.
Additionally, service from Washington Dulles (IAD) to Geneva (GVA) is being scaled back from a daily service to just three flights per week. These moves reflect a broader industry trend in which airlines are shifting narrowbody aircraft like the Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 757-200 to more specialised "long-thin" routes, such as the newly announced service to Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
Summer 2026 Reductions and Cancellations
The following table details the flights that have been removed or reduced from the Summer 2026 schedule compared to previous seasonal peaks.

New Opportunities
While some frequencies are disappearing, United is redirecting those resources into brand-new nonstop services. Starting in late April and May 2026, the carrier will launch exclusive routes to Bari, Italy; Split, Croatia; and Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
For passengers affected by these cancellations, United has stated that they are eligible for full refunds or rebooking on remaining daily frequencies. As the carrier evolves its "Summer of Europe," the 2026 season looks to be one of geographical breadth over sheer frequency on established routes.
