In a move that redraws the map of South American aviation, Brazilian carrier GOL Linhas Aéreas has officially confirmed the launch of the first direct air link between Paraguay and the United States in over five years. Utilising rare 7th freedom traffic rights, the airline will connect Asunción’s Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU) directly with Miami International (MIA) starting in June 2026.
The announcement follows a series of high-level diplomatic meetings between GOL executives and the Paraguayan government. On February 10, 2026, the framework was finalised at the Mburuvicha Róga presidential residence, marking a milestone for Paraguay’s international connectivity.
A Record-Breaking Narrowbody Mission
The new route is not only a diplomatic triumph but a technical marvel. Spanning approximately 6,154 kilometres, the Asunción–Miami leg will officially become the longest Boeing 737 MAX flight in the world. To facilitate this ultra-long-haul narrowbody operation, GOL will utilise its latest Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, pushing the airframe to an estimated eight-hour flight duration.
The service is made possible by the recent certification of Asunción’s airport by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which verified earlier this year that the facility meets the stringent requirements for non-stop North American operations.

Official Statements from Asunción
The strategic importance of this air bridge was echoed by top officials during the launch event. Celso Ferrer, CEO of GOL, highlighted the expansion's role in the carrier's broader vision:
"The Asunción-Miami route represents a significant step forward in GOL's international network."
President Santiago Peña emphasised the economic windfall expected from the resumption of direct U.S. service, which has been absent since 2021:
"Today, we celebrate a great moment for Paraguay. GOL's direct flights will further boost our economy with new business and tourism opportunities."
Gustavo Leite, the Paraguayan Ambassador to the United States and a key architect of the deal, noted the public demand for the route:
"We are listening to the demands of Paraguayans for a direct connection to the United States. This route will attract investment and boost the region's economy."

Impacted Air Operations and Flight Details
Beginning June 8, 2026, GOL will initiate the service with four weekly frequencies. The operation is structured as a triangular route involving Brazilian hubs to optimise aircraft utilisation while exercising 7th freedom rights to market the ASU–MIA segment.
| Flight No. | Route | Departure Time | Arrival Time | Duration | Operating Days |

*Flight numbers are provisional based on current GOL international numbering standards. Service to Rio de Janeiro (GIG) via Asunción is slated for an August 10, 2026, start date.
Looking Ahead
For travellers, the new "Premium Economy" configuration on GOL’s 737 MAX 8, featuring blocked middle seats and enhanced catering, aims to provide the comfort necessary for an eight-hour narrowbody flight. As Paraguay pursues FAA Category 1 status, the entry of GOL is viewed as a "country brand" endorsement that could lead to even more North American carriers eyeing Asunción.
