Delta Air Lines Pauses Hot Meals From Detroit Flights After Food Safety Concerns

BY BHAVYA VELANI Published on October 14, 2024 0 COMMENTS

Due to food safety concerns, Delta Air Lines halts hot meals on over 200 Detroit flights. The Atlanta-based carrier suspended operations at its Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport catering facility after a recent inspection revealed issues.

Delta has shifted to sourcing hot meals from alternative facilities to maintain service, CNBC reported.

The airline announced the decision on Sunday, promptly shutting down hot food production at the affected kitchen. Delta informed flight crews on Friday about an "unforeseen supply chain issue" impacting first-class meal service.

The carrier increased snack provisions on the affected flights to address the situation. Delta assures that no illnesses have been reported among customers or employees and there is nothing to concern on food safety.

The airline is taking steps to compensate passengers affected by the meal service disruption, offering travel vouchers or frequent flyer miles.

Delta is also facing legal action from a Washington woman claiming severe burns from a coffee spill on a Paris-bound flight. Cheryl Myers filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, alleging first- and second-degree burns.

The lawsuit accuses Delta's flight crew of dismissing Myers' concerns and delaying medical care, potentially worsening her injuries.

Myers claims the airline failed to follow proper medical emergency protocols.

Attorney Mark Lindquist represents Myers, stating, "This coffee exceeded industry temperature standards significantly. Even the emergency room doctor expressed shock at the coffee's extreme heat."

Myers, herself a flight attendant for another airline, describes the coffee as "boiling." The lawsuit argues that Delta's failure to provide adequate medical care or seek immediate assistance contributed to the burn severity.

This incident follows a recent Delta flight diversion from Detroit to Amsterdam, which landed at New York JFK due to reports of spoiled chicken. The airline subsequently limited meal options to pasta-only on certain flights for several days.
