Cessna Citation M2 Gen3 Completes First Flight, Moving Closer to Certification

Textron Aviation's Cessna Citation M2 Gen3 took to the skies for the first time, marking a significant step in the certification program for the next generation light jet. The flight test brings the manufacturer closer to delivering the updated aircraft to customers.

Test pilots evaluated the aircraft's performance, handling characteristics, and onboard systems during the sortie, the maiden flight lasted over two hours.

This milestone reflects the dedication and expertise of our team and highlights our commitment to designing, certifying and delivering the best aircraft for our customers

said Chris Hearne, senior vice president of engineering and programs at Textron Aviation. The company plans to conduct additional flight testing throughout the certification process.

What the Gen3 Brings to the Cockpit

The M2 Gen3 builds on the existing M2 platform with several updates aimed at modernizing the flight deck and improving the passenger experience. The headline change involves the integration of the Garmin G3000 PRIME avionics suite, which features touchscreen controllers and high-resolution displays.

The new avionics package replaces the previous generation system and offers pilots an updated interface for managing flight planning, navigation, and aircraft systems. The flight deck redesign aims to reduce pilot workload and improve situational awareness during all phases of flight.

Cabin updates include refreshed interior materials and new design options intended to enhance passenger comfort. The aircraft retains the basic dimensions and seating capacity that have made the M2 popular among owner-operators and charter fleets.

Performance Specifications

The Citation M2 Gen3 keeps the performance numbers that have defined the family. The aircraft offers a maximum cruise speed of 404 ktas and a range of 1,550 nautical miles, according to the manufacturer. It can operate from runways as short as 3,210 feet, giving it access to smaller airports that larger business jets cannot use.

Power comes from twin Williams International FJ44-1AP-21 engines. The aircraft seats up to seven passengers in a standard configuration and is certified for single-pilot operation, a feature that has helped drive its adoption among individual owners.

Part of a Broader Refresh

The M2 Gen3 is one of three light jets in Textron Aviation's Gen3 lineup. The company announced the Gen3 program for the M2, CJ3, and CJ4, with each model receiving similar avionics and cabin updates. Textron has already announced the Citation CJ3 Gen3 and CJ4 Gen3, both of which feature the Garmin G3000 Prime flight deck and are progressing towards certification.

By updating all three aircraft with a common avionics platform, Textron Aviation aims to simplify training and maintenance for operators that fly more than one type. Pilots who move between models will encounter the same Garmin G3000 PRIME system, reducing the learning curve.

The Citation M2 first entered service in 2013 as a replacement for the Citation Mustang and CJ1+. Since then, Textron Aviation has delivered the aircraft to customers worldwide, with the jet finding a niche among first- time jet buyers and operators looking for an entry-level twin-engine option.

Path to Certification

Flight testing will cover performance validation, systems integration, and edge cases that regulators require manufacturers to demonstrate before approving an aircraft for service. The Gen3 program benefits from being a derivative of an already certified platform, which typically shortens the path to approval compared with a clean sheet design. Furthermore, Textron Aviation has also indicated the program remains on track.

Textron Aviation operates as a Textron Inc. business and produces aircraft under the Cessna, Beechcraft, and Hawker brands. The company's business jet portfolio ranges from the entry level M2 to the long range Citation Longitude, with the Citation Ascend and Citation Gen2 lineup forming the middle of the range.

For current M2 operators and prospective buyers, the Gen3 update offers a refreshed product without the disruption of moving to an entirely new airframe. Customers who already operate the M2 will find familiar handling paired with modernized systems once deliveries begin.
