ANA Finalizes Order for Eight More Embraer E190-E2 Jets, Bringing Total Commitment to 28 Aircraft

Embraer and All Nippon Airways (ANA) have finalized a firm order for eight additional E190-E2 regional jets, converting a board-approved commitment into a signed contract. The deal adds to ANA's original 15-aircraft order and marks a deeper partnership between Embraer and one of Asia's largest airline groups.

The new agreement brings ANA Holdings' total firm E190-E2 orders to 23 aircraft, with five purchase options still outstanding – for a potential fleet of up to 28.

From Board Approval to Firm Contract

ANA Holdings' board of directors approved the eight-aircraft expansion on July 29, 2026, building on the carrier's original commitment of 15 firm orders and five options signed with Embraer on February 25, 2025 – the first time ANA integrated Embraer jets into its fleet. With the contract now finalized, the value of the new order will be included in Embraer's backlog figures for the current reporting period

ANA cited the need to modernize its regional network with equipment offering lower fuel burn and reduced emissions per seat, along with improved flexibility to balance capacity with demand on domestic routes over the medium to long term.

Context for Embraer

The order adds to a run of commercial wins for Embraer's E2 program, which posted a record order backlog of $34.5 billion in the second quarter of 2026 – its seventh consecutive quarter of growth. The program has seen renewed interest from carriers looking for smaller narrowbody aircraft as supply constraints affect larger jets from Airbus and Boeing, with delivery slots for competing types stretching into the next decade.

Japanese Market Significance

Japan's domestic aviation market relies heavily on regional aircraft to connect its network of secondary airports. ANA has historically used a mix of Boeing 737s, Airbus A320 family jets, and turboprops for these operations, alongside the now-discontinued Mitsubishi SpaceJet program, which was canceled in 2023.

The expanded ACMI partnership follows a May 29, 2026 report from Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, which recommended managed outsourcing partnerships as a practical way to sustain the country's domestic aviation network. By sharing maintenance resources and fleet assets between ANA and IBEX Airlines, the arrangement is designed to maintain flight frequencies to secondary cities that cannot support larger mainline aircraft. If approved by relevant authorities, IBEX Airlines will also outsource its maintenance operations to ANA.

What Happens Next

Training programs for pilots and maintenance staff will need to be established as the E190-E2 represents a new aircraft type for the ANA Group. Embraer is expected to provide further updates on the program as deliveries approach, beginning with the original order's aircraft in fiscal year 2028.
