Pivot Airlines Rebrands to Great North Airlines to Spearhead Canada’s Regional Revival

WATERLOO, ONTARIO – In a move that signals a definitive "pivot" away from its storied and at times turbulent past, Pivot Airlines has officially rebranded as Great North Airlines as of January 8, 2026. The Mississauga-based carrier, which has operated primarily as a specialised charter and ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) provider, is now positioning itself to fill the widening gap in Canada’s regional aviation sector through a dual-pronged strategy: aggressive Capacity Purchase Agreements (CPA) and the long-awaited launch of scheduled passenger services.

The rebranding is more than a name change; it represents a psychological and operational reset. After the 2022 detention of its crew in the Dominican Republic, a saga that tested the resilience of the airline's leadership, the emergence of Great North Airlines (ICAO: GGN, Call Sign: GREAT NORTH) marks a clean slate and a bold bet on the "utility" of regional connectivity in a nation of vast distances.

The Strategic Pivot

With major Canadian carriers like Air Canada and WestJet increasingly focusing their narrowbody fleets on transborder and sun destinations, secondary markets have faced a "connectivity vacuum." Great North Airlines aims to solve this by offering its fleet of CRJ200 and Dash 8 aircraft to mainline carriers through CPAs, effectively acting as the regional arm for larger airlines.

Simultaneously, the airline is utilising its newly acquired Dash 8-315 aircraft (scheduled to join the fleet in March 2026) to launch independent, scheduled routes. These services will connect the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF)—the airline’s primary maintenance and operational base with critical business hubs in Eastern Canada.

Fleet Modernisation and Technical Readiness

The carrier’s "Great North" era is backed by a reinforced ownership group, Pivot Holding Company Canada Inc., which includes a 24.9% stake from the Boston-based Smart Green Aviation Group (SGA). This partnership is expected to eventually bring hydrogen-fuelled, zero-emission technology to the Great North fleet, aligning with the industry’s 2030 decarbonisation goals.

Currently, the airline is scaling its technical team, having recently announced a major hiring drive for Dash 8-100/300 Captains and Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers to support its expanding fleet of turboprops and regional jets.
