Honeywell Aerospace and Odys Aviation have officially unveiled a joint counter-UAS (C-UAS) defense solution designed to neutralize the growing global threat of hostile drone swarms. Announced today, April 1, 2026, the collaboration integrates Honeywell’s SAMURAI (Stationary and Mobile UAS Reveal and Intercept) platform with Odys Aviation’s Laila hybrid-electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft.
This airborne interceptor creates a "persistent" middle layer of defense, filling a critical gap between short-range ground sensors and high-cost missile defense systems. By lofting advanced sensors and effectors into the sky for hours at a time, the partnership aims to move the front line of defense further from the assets it protects.
Redefining Air Defense Economics
The primary challenge of modern air defense is the unfavorable cost-to-kill ratio when using million-dollar missiles against inexpensive, mass-produced drones. The Laila-SAMURAI system addresses this by providing a reusable, long-endurance platform capable of identifying and defeating multiple threats autonomously.
James Dorris, CEO of Odys Aviation, emphasized the shift in strategy during the launch:
“Drone threats have fundamentally changed the economics and operational requirements of air defense. Critical infrastructure and forward-operating locations require persistent protection across large areas and the ability to engage threats at the horizon long before they're at the doorstep. By combining Honeywell's SAMURAI system with the endurance, runway independence and onboard power capability of Laila, we're introducing a new airborne defense layer designed for today and into the future.”

Technical Edge
Unlike pure-electric VTOLs that suffer from limited flight time, the Laila UAV utilizes a hybrid-electric propulsion system. This allows the aircraft to operate for up to eight hours with a range of 450 miles while carrying a 130-pound payload. Crucially, the aircraft is compatible with standard fuels including Jet A, Jet A-1, and JP-8, allowing it to be deployed in remote environments without specialized charging infrastructure.
Matt Milas, president of Defense and Space at Honeywell Aerospace, noted:

By leveraging Honeywell's long history in avionics, sensors and defense systems, we are enabling C-UAS capabilities that protect farther, respond faster and operate with minimal downtime.”

Operational Validation and Demonstration Windows
As part of the Operational Launch Program (OLP), the Laila platform is scheduled for a series of high-stakes validation flights across the Middle East and North America. These operations will test the system's ability to protect refineries, offshore rigs, and military outposts.

A Strategic Leap for National Security
This collaboration aligns with the broader U.S. national strategy to regain leadership in drone technology and advanced aviation. By using model-based systems engineering, the SAMURAI platform offers a modular "turnkey" solution. Customers can select specific sensors or effectors, ranging from electronic warfare tools to kinetic interceptors, depending on the specific threat profile of their region.
The system is now moving into its final evaluation phase, with the first production units expected to reach customers by the end of 2026. As drone technology becomes increasingly accessible to non-state actors, this Honeywell-Odys partnership may represent the most viable path forward for securing the world’s most vulnerable "soft" targets.
