KLM Strengthens European Network with Three Scenic Routes

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is fine-tuning its European strategy for the Summer 2026 season. The airline announced today that it will add Jersey, Santiago de Compostela, and Oviedo to its network, signalling a "selective growth" approach that focuses on high-demand leisure and cultural hubs.

Operating from its primary hub at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), these routes reinforce KLM's commitment to connecting regional Europe with its vast global network. The expansion comes as the airline continues to modernise its regional fleet, utilising the efficient KLM Cityhopper Embraer aircraft for these new sectors.

The New Destinations

The three new routes target distinct traveller profiles, from pilgrims and nature enthusiasts to those seeking a temperate island escape.

Jersey (JER), Channel Islands: Known as the "Island of Flowers," Jersey offers a unique blend of British and French culture. This route marks a significant return to the Channel Islands, providing islanders with a one-stop connection to the world via Amsterdam.

Santiago de Compostela (SCQ), Spain: The historic capital of Galicia and the terminus of the world-famous Camino de Santiago. This route serves a growing segment of "slow travel" tourists and pilgrims.

Oviedo (OVD), Spain: Located in the Asturias region, Oviedo is the gateway to "Green Spain." It is an ideal entry point for travellers looking to explore the Picos de Europa mountain range and the rugged Atlantic coastline.

Detailed Flight Schedule

Tickets for these routes officially went on sale on December 16, 2025. The services will launch in a phased rollout throughout the Spring and Summer of 2026.

*Note: Jersey will start as a weekly service (Saturdays) before ramping up to daily in peak summer. Santiago and Oviedo will also scale to daily frequencies during July and August.

Fleet Strategy

The flights will be operated by KLM Cityhopper, the airline's regional subsidiary. By deploying the Embraer 175 and Embraer 190, KLM can maintain high frequencies while keeping seat capacity (88–100 seats) optimised for these specialised markets.

This narrowbody regional strategy allows the airline to remain agile, especially in airports like Jersey where larger aircraft may face operational constraints. Furthermore, the 2-2 seating configuration on these jets remains a passenger favourite, as it eliminates the dreaded "middle seat."

The move toward these three destinations highlights KLM's "selective growth" policy. Faced with capacity constraints at Schiphol, the airline is moving away from purely high-volume routes in favour of high yield leisure destinations that offer strong point-to-point demand while also feeding its intercontinental hub.
