Hainan Airlines Takes Delivery of First A330-900neo

Hainan Airlines Takes Delivery of First A330-900neo

On October 31, Hainan Airlines received its first A330-900neo, marking the first delivery of this aircraft type to a Chinese carrier.

The introduction of the aircraft type to Hainan’s fleet came as a surprise. Although a stock market filing hinted at the addition, neither the airline nor Airbus has officially confirmed this order, and it remains unclear how many aircraft the airline plans to add. Speculation of this order emerged in March 2024 after a filing by the Hainan Airlines Holding Group disclosed a purchase of 20 sets of galley equipment for A330-900neo aircraft.

Hainan’s new A330neo comes configured with 301 seats: 24 in business class and 277 in economy class. While not much is known about the aircraft, the airline revealed its economy class seats are domestically made in China. All seats come with 4K ultra-high-definition entertainment screens equipped with Bluetooth connectivity and USB-C charging ports. The cabin for the A330neo will also feature its "Dream Feather" interior design similar to its Boeing 787 aircraft.

According to the airline, the A330neo will initially play a role in serving key markets in Oceania, Europe, and the Middle East, as well as domestically connecting its main base in Haikou with its Beijing hub which currently offers nonstop routes to 10 European cities.

The arrival of these new aircraft to the Hainan fleet enables the carrier to support its continued expansion as highlighted by new destinations recently announced such as Jeddah, Abu Dhabi, Oslo, and Madrid, along with additional service to Brussels and Vienna from more Chinese cities. The A330neo will also enable the airline to replace its older A330ceo aircraft while offering lower operating costs and more seats. This also marks a new attempt for widebody growth within the airline after their short-lived fleet of nine A350s between 2018 and 2022.

Currently, Hainan operates 27 A330ceo aircraft, eight of which are some of the older A330s the airline has, with ages ranging between 12 and 18 years old. These eight aircraft could follow the fate of two A330-200 aircraft the airline removed from service in the last three months if the carrier proceeds to add 20 new aircraft as suggested by the earlier market filing.

Although many details remain unknown, the arrival of the A330neo marks a significant milestone in Hainan Airlines’ strategy, offering improved efficiency, upgraded passenger amenities, and a stronger international network.
