Wisconsin Congressman Tom Tiffany survived an emergency plane landing in Lake Wausau over the weekend, walking away without serious injuries after the small aircraft went down in the water, according to local officials and news reports.

The Republican lawmaker, who represents Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District, was aboard the aircraft when the pilot brought it down in the lake. Emergency crews responded quickly, and Tiffany and others on the plane were pulled from the water safely.

What Happened

The incident occurred on September 12, 2026, when the small plane carrying Tiffany experienced trouble as it approached Wausau Downtown Airport and was forced to make an emergency landing on Lake Wausau, a reservoir along the Wisconsin River in Marathon County. Local reporting from the Kenosha County Eye confirmed that Tiffany and the pilot were the only ones aboard when the aircraft went into the water.

First responders from area agencies reached the scene within minutes. Tiffany and the pilot swam around 150 feet until they found an area in the water shallow enough to stand in. No fatalities were reported.

Photos from the recovery operation, published by Wausau Pilot and Review, showed crews working to pull the aircraft from Lake Wausau the following day. Salvage teams used flotation equipment and a crane to lift the plane out of the water for transport and inspection.

The Congressman's Condition

Tiffany was reported to be uninjured following the landing. The congressman represents a district that covers much of northern Wisconsin, including Wausau and surrounding communities. Before his time in Congress, Tiffany served in the Wisconsin State Senate. He has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2020, when he won a special election to fill the seat vacated by Sean Duffy.

Recovery Operation

Local crews spent hours on the recovery effort. Photos published by the Wausau Pilot and Review showed the aircraft partially submerged before crews hoisted it from the lake. Marine units and dive teams assisted in securing the plane for extraction.

Officials closed portions of the lake to recreational traffic during the recovery to allow crews to work safely. Fuel containment measures were put in place to reduce any environmental impact from the downed aircraft.

The plane was transported from the scene for further inspection by federal investigators.

FAA Investigation Underway

The Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation into the incident, according to Wisconsin Public Radio. Investigators will examine the aircraft for mechanical issues, review maintenance records, and interview those aboard to determine what caused the emergency landing.

The National Transportation Safety Board typically assists in such investigations when general aviation aircraft are involved in serious incidents. Findings from these reviews often take months to complete, with preliminary reports usually released within a few weeks.

FAA officials have not publicly identified a suspected cause. Weather conditions, mechanical failure, and pilot error are among the factors investigators routinely examine in cases like this.

Small Aircraft Safety in Wisconsin

General aviation incidents happen periodically in Wisconsin, where many lawmakers, business travelers, and private pilots use small planes to move across the state. Lake landings, while rare, do occur when pilots face engine trouble or other emergencies over water.

Lake Wausau, a reservoir formed by a dam on the Wisconsin River, sits near populated areas and is a common site for recreational boating. Its relatively calm surface and open space likely factored into the pilot's decision to attempt a water landing rather than seek out an airport.

Aviation safety experts note that water landings in small aircraft carry significant risks, including the possibility of the plane flipping on impact or sinking rapidly. The fact that all occupants exited safely points to a controlled landing under difficult circumstances.

What Comes Next

The FAA investigation will continue in the coming weeks. Investigators will release findings once the review is complete. Tiffany's office has indicated he plans to return to his official duties in Washington.

The recovered aircraft will be examined for evidence of mechanical failure or other issues that may have contributed to the emergency. Federal authorities have not provided a timeline for when the investigation may conclude.

For now, local residents and officials are marking the outcome as a rare piece of good news following what could have been a far more serious incident.
