Flight QR23, operating on Qatar Airways' daily service from Doha Hamad International Airport to Manchester, was in the final stages of its journey when UK authorities became concerned about the aircraft.

UK Ministry of Defence confirmed it launched a Quick Reaction Alert in response, with an RAF spokesperson stating that the flight was "causing concern to civil authorities."

Multiple reports attributed the QRA launch to the Qatar aircraft temporarily losing communications with air traffic control – a technical issue that, in current UK airspace, is treated as a potential security concern and triggers an immediate military response.

Open-source tracking indicated the 777 was not responding to controllers and had not begun its descent into Manchester where expected.

However, the UK Defence Journal suggested a more serious possibility – that the intercept was related to "an incident in which a threat had been made" onboard the aircraft.

The nature of that threat and whether it was assessed as credible was not established.

Neither Qatar Airways nor the RAF addressed the threat claim directly in their public statements, leaving the precise trigger for the QRA unconfirmed.

The RAF maintains fighter jets at 24-hour readiness, capable of launching within minutes to respond to any incident in UK airspace.

QRA launches are ordered for a range of reasons: the most common being unidentified aircraft or an airliner that has stopped responding to air traffic control. 

Most RAF intercepts involve business jets or general aviation traffic rather than scheduled commercial flights, making Friday's interception of a major international widebody relatively unusual.

The Typhoon FGR4 is capable of supersonic flight, though the pilots did not exercise that capability on this occasion.

When RAF jets do go supersonic during intercepts – as has happened on a small number of previous occasions, the resulting sonic booms can cause significant disturbances across populated areas beneath the flight path.

Friday's incident is not the first time flight QR23 has attracted military attention over British airspace.

In August 2014, the same flight, then operated by an Airbus A330, was intercepted by RAF Typhoons and escorted into Manchester Airport after a passenger made a hoax bomb threat onboard. 

On that occasion, flights in and out of Manchester were suspended for approximately 25 minutes while police arrested the individual responsible.

For now, the flight has landed safely and all passengers have disembarked without injury.

Qatar Airways has not issued any further statement beyond confirming the escort, and the RAF has not disclosed whether the Typhoons made visual contact with the flight deck or communicated with the crew by rocking their wings – the standard signal used during military interceptions of commercial aircraft.
