President Donald Trump was reportedly moved off his aircraft using a catering container and secretly transferred to a separate military jet during a NATO summit in Turkey, according to reports citing a credible security threat tied to Iran.

The operation reportedly took place around the NATO gathering in Ankara, Turkey, in early July. The Washington Post reported the account, citing senior U.S. officials, with The New York Times separately confirming key details.

What Reportedly Happened

According to the reporting, the newly refurbished Boeing 747-8 donated by Qatar departed Turkey first, arriving at RAF Mildenhall in Britain that evening. Trump then boarded an older Air Force One jet in Ankara in full public view of cameras, having earlier said he wanted to fly it for old time's sake. Minutes later, he and several aides were secretly moved through a door on the opposite side of the aircraft into a raised catering truck, lowered to the ground, and driven to a separate Air Force C-32A, a military version of the Boeing 757.

The C-32A landed at Mildenhall around 10:20 p.m. local time, with the older decoy jet, carrying journalists and staff told to keep their window shades closed, landing shortly after. Trump was then secretly moved back onto the older aircraft and disembarked from it on camera roughly 40 minutes later, greeting service members before walking to the Qatari jet, with the traveling press, for the flight home.

The White House maintained throughout that Trump had traveled the entire way aboard the former Air Force One. If confirmed in full, the maneuver would be one of the more unconventional protective measures ever used for a sitting president, pairing a decoy aircraft with a catering container in an elaborate, rapidly assembled deception.

Current Tensions

Officials cited in the reporting said intelligence indicated a credible threat targeting the president and Air Force One during his time in Turkey, triggering the decoy plan rather than a standard departure.

The NATO summit itself brought together member states to discuss defense spending, the war in Ukraine, and instability in the Middle East, with Trump pressing allies on military contributions and defending recent U.S. action against Iran. His unannounced switch away from the decoy aircraft, if accurate, means his publicized departure from Turkey was itself part of the ruse, not an early exit from the summit.

Response From Official Channels

The White House did not directly address the deception operation itself.

NATO officials have not commented on the specifics of Trump's movements. This partial response is not unusual; protective agencies typically avoid discussing operational details involving active threats.

Questions That Remain

Several details remain unclear, including the precise nature of the triggering intelligence and whether the president's broader staff knew of the switch in real time. Analysts note that pairing a decoy aircraft with a catering container would let protective agents move a high-value individual through an airport largely undetected, since catering vehicles routinely operate near aircraft without scrutiny.

What Comes Next

Pressure is likely to grow on the White House to address the remaining details, given the implications for U.S. security posture and the standoff with Iran. Lawmakers have already been receiving periodic briefings on the broader Iranian threat picture, and this episode could prompt further scrutiny.

For now, the account of a president secretly moved via catering container, aboard a decoy plane operation orchestrated by his own administration, stands as one of the most striking security episodes of Trump's second term, with some specifics still pending fuller official confirmation.
