Qantas A321 Freighter Makes History at Western Sydney International Airport

A Qantas Airbus A321 freighter has made history as the first cargo aircraft to land at Western Sydney International Airport.

The freighter touched down at 2:00 PM local time on July 13, 2026, after a short positioning flight from Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, where it had arrived the previous day from Christchurch, New Zealand.

A Milestone Flight

The aircraft involved was a Qantas Freight Airbus A321-200P2F registered as VH-XF5, a 20-year-old converted narrowbody that began life as a passenger jet in the United Kingdom in 2006, serving BMED, BMI, and British Airways before being converted for cargo operations. The aircraft is operated by Express Freighters Australia, Qantas's freight subsidiary.

The flight formed part of a broader operational readiness program at Western Sydney International, validating what Qantas described as:

aircraft handling, ground operations, systems, airside coordination and cargo transfer procedures.

Qantas Freight Executive Manager Igor Kwiatkowski said:

Western Sydney International Airport is set to become one of Australia's key air freight hubs and today's flight was an important opportunity to test key procedures ahead of starting operations.

About Western Sydney International Airport

Western Sydney International Airport, is located at Badgerys Creek, approximately 44 kilometers west of Sydney's central business district. Regular domestic freighter operations will begin on July 27, 2026, with the new freight terminal expected to handle more than 850 tonnes of freight each week.

Unlike Sydney's existing Kingsford Smith Airport, the new facility will operate around the clock without a curfew. That capability makes it especially attractive to freight operators, who often rely on overnight flying to meet next-day delivery commitments. The absence of a curfew is expected to reshape Australia's air cargo industry, giving carriers more flexibility to schedule flights during off-peak hours.

Significance for Qantas and the Freight Sector

For Qantas, being the first airline to land at the new airport carries symbolic weight. The national carrier has operated in Australia for more than a century and has committed to establishing a significant presence at Western Sydney International once commercial services begin.

Qantas will handle its cargo operations through a brand-new freight terminal measuring 24,000 square meters (258,334 square feet), capable of operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Freight operators stand to benefit most immediately from the new airport. Kingsford Smith Airport's overnight curfew has long constrained cargo scheduling in Australia's largest city, forcing carriers to route shipments through other airports or accept operational compromises. Western Sydney International removes that limitation entirely.

The A321P2F can carry up to 28 tonnes of cargo across container positions in its main deck and lower hold, making it efficient for domestic freight networks connecting Sydney with Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and other Australian cities.

What Comes Next

The proving flight is one of many that will take place before Western Sydney International opens to regular traffic. Airport operators must complete a rigorous certification process with Australian aviation authorities, including validation of navigation systems, runway performance, air traffic control procedures, and emergency response capabilities.

For now, the Qantas A321 freighter's arrival stands as a marker of progress. The aircraft's wheels touching the tarmac confirmed that construction has reached a stage where real aviation operations can begin, with scheduled cargo services just weeks away and passenger flights following later in the year.
