Porter Airlines Shifts Chicago Operations to O'Hare International Airport Amid Transborder Network Expansion

Porter Airlines is redefining its footprint in the American Midwest with a strategic decision to relocate its Chicago operations from Midway International Airport (MDW) to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). This transition, officially announced last week and confirmed as of February 25, 2026, marks the end of an 18-year era at Midway as the carrier seeks deeper integration with global airline partners and a significant increase in flight frequency.

Starting September 1, 2026, the airline’s service from Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) will shift exclusively to O’Hare. The move is designed to coincide with the opening of the new U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) preclearance facility at Billy Bishop. This infrastructure milestone allows Porter to treat transborder arrivals as domestic flights within the United States.

Strengthening Global Connectivity

The relocation to O’Hare, ranked as one of the world's best-connected hubs, is not merely a change of scenery. It represents a tactical pivot toward codeshare synergies, specifically with American Airlines. By landing at O'Hare, Porter passengers will gain seamless access to hundreds of connecting destinations that were previously unavailable through the point-to-point-focused Midway.

Andrew Pierce, Vice President of Network Planning and Reporting at Porter Airlines, emphasized the carrier’s commitment to expanding its reach during the announcement:

"Porter continues to offer more destinations and flights that complement existing schedules and connect travellers across North America through our hubs."

The shift will also see service capacity triple. While the current Midway route typically operates on a lower frequency, the O’Hare schedule will debut with three daily round-trip flights, all utilizing the De Havilland Dash 8-400 (Q400) aircraft.

A New Era for Billy Bishop Airport

The change also positions Porter to compete directly with Air Canada, which is slated to launch its own service from Billy Bishop to O’Hare on June 1, 2026. This burgeoning "battle of the hubs" at Toronto's downtown airport is expected to lower fares for business travelers who prefer the convenience of YTZ over Toronto Pearson.

Michael McMurray, Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Aviation, highlighted the importance of Porter’s arrival in a statement welcoming the carrier:

"On behalf of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, we welcome Porter Airlines to the busiest airport in the United States, the nation's best-connected airport, and a rapidly growing hub for American Airlines, Porter's new codeshare partner."

Impacted and Scheduled Air Operations

As the airline begins the transition phase, passengers currently booked on Midway routes for late summer will see their itineraries adjusted to O’Hare. Below are the flight details for the current Midway service and the upcoming O’Hare schedule.

With the new preclearance facility at Billy Bishop expected to be operational in the coming weeks, Porter’s management remains optimistic that the increased convenience will offset the loss of the shorter commute times typically associated with Midway. "Travellers want more options and, when flying with Porter, they receive an elevated level of care and service that makes getting there enjoyable and something to look forward to," Pierce added.
