Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in southeast Florida, USA, is getting a 5th terminal to expand and meet the ever-growing demand in the region. The airport is also planning to rebuild and refurbish other important facilities.
Work on this new terminal began in early October 2023 and will likely last until 2026. The project will cost over $400 million, and once complete, the new building will house 5 new gates for departures and arrivals. The terminal will also feature check-in, security, baggage, and concessions for passengers. There is also a plan to build more land-side options for dining and shopping, something uncommon at US-based airports.
JetBlue Airways, a New York-based low-cost carrier with a significant presence at FLL, oversees the project with Parsons, a technology company.
This small expansion project is part of a so-called "Master Plan" by the airport authorities, in which the airport aims to refurbish or entirely rebuild the entire airport. The airport also plans to build another hotel and commercial center, and one of the airport's parking garages will also be rebuilt to accommodate more vehicles.
There does remain a concern among locals about traffic and noise. Still, overseers say that it's not likely to be a major factor, and any disruption would only be temporary and would be a small sacrifice to maintain the airport's ability to handle the hefty tourism market of South Florida.
The new terminal is expected to handle solely domestic flights, although this could change, and the airport could decide to add customs facilities if demand necessitates it.
