Flydubai has suspended all flights between Dubai and Tel Aviv following a foiled attack aboard one of its aircraft, which Israeli officials are treating as a possible act of terrorism.
The low-cost carrier, owned by the government of Dubai, confirmed the indefinite suspension after an incident in which a passenger allegedly attempted to breach the cockpit and attack the captain with a knife during a flight bound for Tel Aviv.
What happened on board
The incident unfolded on Flydubai flight FZ1073, which had departed Dubai International Airport for Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. According to reports, the copilot attempted to stab the Israeli captain before being subdued by crew members and other passengers.
The flight crew declared an emergency and diverted the aircraft to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. No injuries to passengers were reported, and the suspect was handed over to authorities on the ground in Saudi Arabia upon landing.
Israeli officials have described the incident as an attempted terror attack targeting the Israeli passengers. The identity and nationality of the suspect have not been publicly confirmed by Emirati authorities, who are conducting their own investigation into the matter.
Flydubai suspends the route
In the immediate aftermath, Flydubai announced it would halt all services between Dubai and Tel Aviv until further notice. The airline cited safety concerns and the ongoing investigation as reasons for the suspension.
Flydubai had been one of the most active carriers operating between the United Arab Emirates and Israel since the two countries normalized relations under the Abraham Accords in 2020. The airline launched its Tel Aviv service shortly after the agreement was signed and had maintained a frequent schedule connecting the two cities, even through periods of regional tension.
Passengers holding tickets on the route have been advised to contact the airline for rebooking or refund options. Flydubai has not provided a timeline for when flights might resume.

A sensitive route under strain
The Dubai to Tel Aviv corridor has carried both commercial and symbolic weight since the Abraham Accords opened direct air links between the UAE and Israel. Flydubai, along with Emirates and Israeli carriers, has operated the route as a visible marker of the warming ties between the two nations.
The route has faced disruption before. During previous escalations in the broader regional conflict, including hostilities between Israel and Iran and the war in Gaza, carriers temporarily paused service to Tel Aviv over safety concerns. However, the current suspension stems directly from an onboard security incident rather than external threats to aviation.
Aviation analysts note that an attempted attack on a flight deck represents one of the most serious security breaches a carrier can face. Reinforced cockpit doors, introduced across the global commercial aviation industry after the September 11 attacks, are designed to prevent exactly this type of intrusion.

Investigation underway
Authorities in both the UAE and Israel are examining how the suspect boarded the aircraft and whether a weapon was successfully brought past security screening in Dubai. The findings could have implications for screening protocols at one of the world's busiest international hubs.
Dubai International Airport operates some of the most extensive passenger screening procedures in the Middle East, and any lapse that allowed a bladed weapon on board would prompt a review of those measures. Investigators are also looking into the suspect's background, travel history, and any possible motive.
Israeli security services typically coordinate closely with foreign airports on flights bound for Tel Aviv, given the heightened threat profile associated with Israeli-bound aviation. The extent of that coordination on the Flydubai service is likely to form part of the inquiry.
Impact on travelers
The suspension affects thousands of passengers who rely on the Dubai to Tel Aviv route for business, tourism, and family travel. Dubai serves as a connecting point for travelers moving between Israel and destinations across Asia, Africa, and the Gulf.
With Flydubai's exit from the route, remaining options for direct travel between the two cities are limited. Passengers may need to route through other hubs or use alternative carriers that continue to serve Ben Gurion Airport.
Travel advisories have not been issued by either government warning against flights between the two countries, and other carriers have not announced any changes to their own schedules at this stage.
Diplomatic sensitivities
The incident arrives at a delicate moment for UAE-Israel relations. While the Abraham Accords have endured through regional turbulence, including the war in Gaza, both governments have worked to insulate the bilateral relationship from wider tensions. An attempted attack on an Israeli pilot aboard an Emirati aircraft adds a new dimension to those efforts.
Neither the Israeli nor the Emirati foreign ministries have issued extensive public statements beyond confirming cooperation on the investigation. Officials from both sides are expected to coordinate closely in the coming days as details emerge.
For now, Flydubai's suspension stands, and travelers planning journeys between the two cities should expect disruption to continue until the airline provides further guidance. Updates are expected as the investigation progresses and as Emirati authorities complete their initial inquiries into the suspect and the circumstances of the attack.
