Alaska Airlines Defends Home Turf with 7 Strategic New Routes for 2026

SEATTLE, WA – Today, December 18, 2025, Alaska Airlines sent a clear message to its competitors: the Pacific Northwest and the Great Land belong to the Eskimo. In a major network offensive, the Seattle-based carrier unveiled seven new nonstop routes from its hubs in Anchorage (ANC) and Portland (PDX), marking its largest-ever summer schedule for both cities.

The expansion, set to roll out between March and June 2026, isn't just about adding dots to a map; it's a calculated "fortification" of its home territory. By shifting domestic regional connections to Portland and Anchorage, Alaska is clearing the runway for its ambitious transformation of Seattle-Tacoma (SEA) into a premier international gateway.

Empowering the "Rose City" and the "Midnight Sun"

Kirsten Amrine, Alaska’s Vice President of Revenue Management and Network Planning, highlighted that these additions are "essential to our growing global network."

Alaska is boosting its summer lineup to 17 nonstop destinations to the Lower 48 and Hawaii. Most notably, the airline is launching a weekly nonstop to Boston (BOS), one of the longest Boeing 737 routes in the country, at over 3,300 miles.

The airline is relieving congestion at its Seattle hub by moving regional "feeder" flights to PDX. This includes the return of service to Everett/Paine Field (PAE) and new daily links to Bellingham (BLI) and Pasco (PSC).

The 2026 Expansion: New Route Details

The upcoming schedule features a mix of year-round regional workhorses and high-demand summer seasonal "leisure" routes.

The "Sea-Tac" Relief Valve

Aviation analysts view this expansion as a direct response to Delta Air Lines' continued pressure in Seattle. By "fortifying the turf" in secondary hubs:

Portland becomes a more viable alternative for travellers in Washington and Oregon who want to avoid the crowds at SEA.

Anchorage cements Alaska’s dominance in the 49th state, making it nearly impossible for rivals to gain a foothold in the lucrative summer cruise and tourism market.

The Seattle Hub is freed up to support Alaska’s brand-new wide body operations to London, Rome, and Tokyo, utilising the Boeing 787 Dreamliners acquired through the Hawaiian Airlines merger.

“This is about putting more connecting flights through Portland to decrease the strain in Seattle” an airline spokesperson noted, specifically referring to the new Bellingham-Portland link.

Beyond the New Routes

In addition to the seven new routes, Alaska is doubling down on existing success stories:

Sacramento (SMF) & San Diego (SAN): Both will see a second weekly nonstop from Anchorage during the peak summer months.

Fairbanks (FAI): The daily Portland-Fairbanks summer link will be upgraded to a larger Boeing 737 to accommodate surging demand.
