Wizz Air Relaunches Suceava Base with Two A321neos and Seven New Routes

Wizz Air, the low-cost giant, has officially completed a swift and strategic reversal in its Romanian operations by reopening its base at Suceava “Ștefan cel Mare” International Airport (SCV). The move, announced just months after a temporary base closure, signals a renewed commitment to the Bucovina region and a major expansion for the carrier in the Eastern European market.

The relaunch, which took effect this December, is supported by the allocation of two brand-new Airbus A321neo family aircraft, bringing Wizz Air's total Romanian fleet to 41 aircraft, with further expansion planned for 2026. This significant capacity injection is expected to add more than 130,000 seats for the current winter season.

Seven New Routes to Key European Cities

The reopening immediately enhances connectivity by launching seven new direct routes to five countries, catering heavily to both the diaspora and growing demand for leisure travel.

In addition to the new routes, Wizz Air will also increase flight frequency on its popular existing service to Dortmund starting in January 2026, boosting it from three to four weekly flights. The airline now operates a total of 13 routes from Suceava.

The Strategic Rationale

Wizz Air had previously closed its Suceava base in October 2023, citing the need to "optimise the Romanian market" and relocate capacity to other routes with higher demand. However, the rapid decision to return underscores the airline's view of Romania as a pivotal market and the high growth potential of the northeastern region.

Mauro Peneda, Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta, emphasised the long-term view at the reopening press conference: "We are delighted to mark this December with the reopening of our Suceava base, now fully operational and supported by state-of-the-art aircraft. This moment is an important milestone in strengthening our presence in Suceava and reflects our continued commitment to expanding operations in Romania."

Modern Infrastructure Supports Expansion

The timing of Wizz Air's return also aligns with significant local investments in the airport's infrastructure. Local authorities highlighted ongoing projects, including the installation of a new ILS CAT III system (which will allow for landings in much lower visibility) plans for a new Terminal 3, and upgrades to the apron and access roads.

This improved infrastructure is key to supporting the reliable, high frequency operations of a low cost carrier base. By leveraging the more fuel efficient A321neo aircraft, Wizz Air is aiming to reduce operational costs and solidify its ultra low fare model across the expanded network.

The relaunch strengthens Suceava’s position as a critical regional gateway for travel into and out of the historical Bucovina region, promising a significant boost to local tourism and economic activity.
